Day 28: Future

Continuing Inktober for writers with a drabble of Renkie’s futurestuck, featuring @thecyrillictrolls‘ Ixalia.

“Dude, we’re going to be late,” Ixalia chided her bunk mate, clicking the final clasps of her imperial uniform into place. The uniform fit her; The carapace was stocky, light for dodging. There was no color but the iridescent black of the beetles it was harvested from, save the blazingly bright culling fork on the chest, and her own green symbol, applied by the wardrobifier. 

“I know, I know, I just gotta say bye to Majken.” Renkie waved Ixalia off. She had to give a final congratulations to the gal for her concert on imperial broadcast. That stuff got publicity like nobody’s business! “Like, give me two minutes, top- HUGH!” Ixalia chucked the set of armor in Renkie’s face, the cuspblod almost falling off her chair. She didn’t like wearing it, truth be told. It was so dull and boring. She didn’t really need the extra protction, she could whether some pain. Worse, though, it made her blend in with everyone else. She hated that the most about the threshecutioners; They were so uniform. They’d allowed her to keep the piercings, but the body paint was banned, as was the neon makeup she had. 

She huffed and gave Majken a real goodbye, then started pulling on the lame uniform. Ixalia, despite complaints about having to put on her own by herself, helped with all the clasps and the rank pin on the shoulder. It was the mark of a threshecutioner trainee, one of many. They made those marks of honor by the dozens; It was the higher rank badges that came in limited supply. Renkie and Ixalia both had their eyes on those. That was where glory and real combat would be found.

Luckily, they were well on their way. Every night of physical training, the blood-sisters excelled. Theirs was the best spar records, and their physical tests were all impeccable. Their preparations had served them well.

The real challenge came in another form. 

Renkie barely managed to pull her blood-sister down when a knife flew their way, bouncing off the steel wall with a soft tink. One of many recruits hoping to wean competition while the ceremonies were still sweeps off, with people still untrained and fresh. It was all off the records, but there was no doubt the instructors knew. If anything, they seemed amused by the fervorous fighting to be worthy of defending the mighty empress.

Their sickles were all in the armory, out of hands, and Renkie and Ixalia were frankly not clever enough to smuggle weapons. Luckily, their fists were plenty. The two ladies got back to back, more rats crawling out of their nooks in hopes of swarming two high mark rivals. "See? We’d be late either way, you baby,” Renkie snarked, before their “rivals” came down on them.

“but did you do it?” for harvest season

“’Course I did it!” you bark a laugh, “Who do you take me for!” 

Ixalia looks unconvinced, “You against 50, just for the sake of pissing off a dickhead? Come on, Renkie, even for you, that’s dumb.” She’s got her arm propped on the couch and her face in her palm, eyeing you with the intent of a child who is amazed by a magician, but who knows there’s gotta be some kind of compartment in the hat. “20? Maybe. If they were real wimpy.”

“C’mon, at least 30!” you haggle, throwing your hands in the air dramatically, then crossing them under your chest again. You’re standing in the middle of the living room; your favorite story-telling spot. The very spot where she’s accused you of embezzlement every other story you tell of yourself. “He was reeeeally douchy.”

“Still! There’s no way you could do it alone!” her thick brows furrow. This is turning into a pride thing, you suspect.

“I promise! 50 people! And all of them we’re trained!”

“NO, I DRAW THE LINE!” she gets up on her feet, frowning in annoyance. “50 TRAINED SOLDIERS IS TOO MUCH!”

You grin. She’s getting worked up, “And they all had imperial weaponry.”

What follows is a full hour of Ixalia protesting every claim you make about the story, going so far as to ask you specific questions about the blades and doing everything she can to disprove your story that would far outdo her best fight. You revel in it, doing all you can to pro-long the argument. Eventually, the argument is settled when she gets you in a rough pin and you surrender the real story. She seems satisfied, but gives you a punch in the shoulder for good measure.

this one was tricky! i love opal, but im not sure if i have a great grasp of her personality post-Mauvan, which is part of why this got so goddamn long. i hope i got close?

RED: Surprisingly soft. Renkie gets really sweet with her red! I think it’s because it’s the one time she will let herself be vulnerable? Either way, she’d be really sweet towards Opal, especially now that they’re in a bad place. She’d try her best not to be as bombastic, even though that’s hard for her. Meanwhile, I’d say Opal would welcome the soft treatment, at least when they’re in private. A nice moment to feel safe in big strong arms or some gay shit like that. Lots of cuddling obviously.

Other than that, though, it would be kinda similar to the way they are now? Renkie loves painting friends and quadrants alike, although any paint on Opal would have a pretty obvious theme (like a billion hearts). Renkie is still there for all Opal’s games to cheer them on. Less flirting w the rest of the team. Possibly less sex, but that’s a high bar for them to reach anyway fjgkfgh.

I can’t say for sure, but I’d hope it would be good for Opal. If they still canoniclly has/had a crush on Renkie, it would be nice for a non-messy recipocation, and having a red that’s soft and sweet might be what they need? Whether Renkie’s bombastic nature outside of private moments and trying to encourage Opal to be violent would be good is way more questionable tbh. Maybe it would help get Opal back to their more forceful self, whether that’s good or bad? Also I’m imagining Opal getting pretty clingy, but I might be wrong.

PALE: SEE LIKE. THIS IS A WEIRD ONE CUSS THEY BOTH GOT A SERIOUS TEMPER. Renkie is basically an anti-moirail because she encourages violence and aggression as a solution. Especially for Opal, who is playing a violent game professionally. Why stop being aggressive when that’s your profession, right?

So I guess Opal would be the one to calm down Renkie. Maybe her new perspective would put her in a position where she feels Renkie’s overly angry mindset should be calmed down? Maybe even out of concern that Renkie would become as toxic as Mauvan? I do get the impression Opal does care about Renkie and wants to see the best in her. Getting Renkie to listen would be the hard part, since she doesn’t really think her way of acting is bad? Not helped that a lot of her friends are enablers. I’m not sure if Opal could be forceful enough to get Renkie to sit down and listen. At the same time, Renkie considers them a friend and could potentially listen, but, again, it would require some forcefulness on their part.

Also, still body paint, but diamonds instead of hearts. If it works, I’d even say that’s a good time for their feelings jams, since that’s when Renkie is at her coolest! 

BLACK: Oh man uh. Like, they’re good buds? Perhaps if Renkie decided the best way to get Opal back to her old self would be a rivalry? o: It wouldn’t necessarily be 100% sincere on her part, but Renkie would not see much of a problem faking it for a friend. 

It’d probably be a walk on egg shells, though. Threats of punching are totally out, but Renkie is physical af. The basis of their rivalry would probably be more along the lines of Renkie trying to taunt violence, which I can see ending bad as hell, OR trying a sort of... “I know you can do better” taunt? Like, she says Opal can totally beat her in arm wrestling if she stopped moping and actually put those muscles to work. 

I’d say it’s like a 90% chance of going badly LMAO. 

ASHEN: In which Renkie finds out (usually via Jil I’d imagine) that Opal is getting with a bad black and fucking piledrives them. Renkie is extremely protective of her friends, so anyone who could pose a threat to Opal is getting destroyed. Especially if it’s to Opal, tbh. She doesn’t get the intricacies, but she knows Opal probably shouldn’t be with someone physically violent right now.
