I just want to be a renaissance man, spending all day working on art, learning languages... making horrifically incorrect assertions about science... gay,
Beginner's Mind
If you've visited my blog lately (here) You've likely noticed the subtitle: "Beginner's Mind: Many Options Expert's Mind: Few options." This is taken from my favorite Zen Master, Shunryu Suzuki Roshi, who famously said "In a Beginner's Mind, there are many options. In an Expert's Mind there are few." For the longest time, I was sort of flailing around trying to figure out whether I could have numerous interests and still pursue spiritual practice seriously. Do I have to give up learning languages, art, science, etc, to focus on spirituality? These days, I've come to the decision that no, you really don't. Turns out, that being a multipotentialite (Renaissance Man), maintaining Beginner's Mind is a spiritual practice. Maintaining a sense of play, of curiosity, of not taking yourself and the world entirely seriously, is the very core of spirituality, not who or what you worship, or the rituals you perform, but how you do what you do. Not even what you do that decides whether you are spiritual.
