Renovations
You were confused when the doorbell rang. The mail had already been delivered and you had spent the morning painting the living room a new gray-blue color. Your oversized shirt and messy hair were spotted with paint so you prayed it was just Mrs. Nelson across the hall needing someone to walk her dog Percy. Otherwise you really just wanted to get back to your renovations.
You hadn’t seen her since the party a few nights ago. You think back to the dancing, the way the light hit her eyes while she laughed at your jokes and you can’t help but smile. She just made you so damn happy; that’s why you were on your way to see her now.
You hopped up the stairs and rang her doorbell. You stuck your hands in your pockets and began to rock on your heels; normally you aren’t a nervous person but the girl just did something that made a knot form in the middle of your stomach every time she was around.
You felt that knot hit the ground when she opened the door, hair fluttering around her temples from the wind and covered in paint. You took in every separate smear of paint trying to decide if the spots across her nose were paint or freckles. She smiled as she cocked her head to the side and ushered you inside. You smiled back and as you moved inside you noted that yep, those were freckles and yep, they made her even cuter. You decided that she should never cover them up with makeup again.
You moved into the living room and looked at the two walls to compare colors. You quickly realized that she was impressive at home renovations and that her new fixer upper was now becoming a beautiful home. By this time she had moved beside you and you slipped your arm around her waist to get her closer. She emanated a smell of honey and lavender which calmed the last of the nerves in his stomach. He wanted to hear about all her plans for the house and as she relaxed into his side and started explaining you decided this was your new favorite moment.
So it wasn’t Mrs. Nelson but you took one look at the boy standing in your doorway and decided you were fine with it. He looked so happy to see you that you instantly forgot how “undone” (as your aunt would say) you were and walked to where he was in the living room.
Your heart fluttered as you took in his scent, sandalwood and a dash of cinnamon. You made a mental note to figure out why he always smelled like cinnamon. He moved slightly and placed an arm around your waist. He began talking about how good the place looked and inquiring about your other renovation plans. You leaned into the embrace and began to explain your plans for each room. He looked down at you and smiled as he listened and you felt your heart flutter again; you decided that this moment was your new favorite.
