Scope is in the details
How does a renovation start? Most of the time, it is with an idea based on necessity or need to improve one’s existing home, driven by an array of inspiration brought on by photos collected, and inspiring spaces remembered. Ideas and inspiration are the fuel of innovation and progress, but in order for these to materialize into reality a plan needs to form. In my industry, with years of experience in participating in residential construction process, a clear cut path formed as to what a project scope should look like. I am a leading supporter of a properly drafted document which depicts the planned renovation in as much detail as possible. The value of this text has its weight literally in gold.
Every project I have ever worked on is different. Granted, a main floor kitchen renovation, basement development, or even a major remodelling of an entire house generally follow the same building process, and one cannot sway from the logical progression of a construction project. Where these projects differ, is in the scope. Every project has a customized realm of work which makes it unique. This is the reason I work in the custom renovation and house development in Calgary, but this is also the reason these sorts of projects require a detailed scope to go along with them.
In an earlier blog I discussed the necessity of accurately generated drawings via the design process. Project Scope plays a crucial role in this design process. Drafting and development of an accurate written addendum works in unison with the drawn interpretation. This process took years of development, but I am glad I invested into learning and improving on this. Rewards of a properly written and drafted project become apparent with all parties involved. First, trade partners quote and work on one’s project with confidence. Second, my Site Supervisor builds a schedule and leads the project with conviction. Third, and most important, my client understands the process much clearer, is able to foresee the upcoming stages, and feels the empowerment of understanding the overall project.
Scope is in the details. Every project has unique traits based on the individual’s taste and need combined with the home’s condition and set budget. Within this formula, lie the details which are crucial to cost effective and satisfying results. How does a renovation start? With proper planning and capturing all the unique details.
