The sting of the explosion is still prickling along his arms and legs, ears ringing hard like he’s forgotten his ear protection for a drum session. He can still feel the heat of it, see the flash and hear the rolling of the cart beneath the ground.
He spent so long on that fucking trap. Of course it ended up failing.

Ok now you’ve got me rotating renpulse. I’ve literally been skimming through their episodes to find more moments with them.
I’m thinking about the life games and how 3L!Impulse was a spy for Dogwarts and how he was probably spying for them to seek praise and approval from Ren while also complimenting all of Ren’s ideas. Also he might have been internally been jealous of Martyn and Ren’s relationship and that might be why he ended up betraying them (I never watched their perspectives so I’m kinda going off of fandom observations)
And then double life (6min in to impulse’s ep 3 and 4) they meet twice in the deep dark. The first time Ren shouts to scare Impulse and then asks really gently if he is geared up and enchanted. The next time Ren threatens Impulse since he is newly red and Impulse hides but still checks if Ren is ok (since Bigb was the one who died) before Ren decides not to kill him. They just still check in with each other even when they are supposed to be enemies. But then Ren kills Bdubs (and by extension Impulse) at the pool party and despite being married to Bdubs I can imagine Impulse is incredibly hurt by this. Impulse saying “I think that was uncalled for, for them to come after us, personally.” But then Ren and the other reds come by and Ren apologizes to them. I can imagine the guilt that he feels accidentally killing someone he has complicated feeling towards. Always the life games causing someone to kill a beloved.
But all the while they are also on hermitcraft and their s7 hippie area and I bet they would sit up at night and just talk and get to know each other. Maybe they share a kiss or two just because they can. But nothing much else happens and they are still just friends. And then s8 begins and Doc and Ren get close and then there is the whole boatem vs octagon and they can’t help but become competetive business enemies.
OH MY GOD THE OCTAGON HAVING GOATS BUT THEN IMPULSE BEING AGAINST THE GOAT HORNS IN DL! MAYBE THEY HURT TO HEAR BECAUSE IT REMINDS HIM OF WHAT THEY COULD HAVE BEEN
And maybe they still haven’t talked much since the moon crash and then Ren becomes king and Impulse agrees to start the resistance despite seeing Ren falling into madness (again). Impulse thinks that maybe, just maybe, he can save him this time. Even if it means taking him down.

Yeah..Ren loves stroking Impulse’s head. Hm.
In another life, maybe they could have been more. They could've shared lazy mornings in bed, Ren stroking through Impulse's hair, holding fingers to his cheeks. And Impulse would turn and kiss his fingertips, and they'd both laugh at how in love they are. Ren would braid Impulse's hair and he'd gently unravel each one at the end of the day.
But that isn't this life. Here, they are a king and the man who fights to overthrow him. And they are both left to think about what could have been instead.
