Because I do mainly classical-style singing with my teacher, I don't do a lot of musical theatre rep. One of the songs I am doing is Nymphs and Shepherds. I was wondering, is there any point in having these songs in my book? Would it ever be appropriate to sing a song like that in a musical theatre audition? Thanks :)
This particular song doesn’t have a lot of place in musical theatre. This pastoral/folk/classical style doesn’t really exist in musical theatre, sadly. There are definitely classical pieces that could work in your book--particularly if you look at some operettas and some Gilbert and Sullivan. It won’t work for many auditions, but it will be suited to some!
Should everyone have a comedy song in their book? I hear conflicting opinions and was wondering what you thought
Yes. My evidence is the fact that I have been asked for a comedic songs many times when in auditions (meaning, I sang a song and they said, “great, do you have a comedic song you could sing for us?”) And if I hadn’t had that comedic song in my book, I would have had to say no--which is a word you never want to have to say in an audition!
Do you think that everyone should have at least one jazz piece in their book? I know that a lot of people aren't really into jazz, and don't care to sing for it, but I feel like eventually at some point in a career, jazz will come up. What do you think?
I think if it doesn’t suit your voice and you have no interest in it, there’s not a huge need. For instance, a lot of belters don’t keep super legit material in their book. There are lots of really specific genres that I feel aren’t necssary to have in your book, but if you really excel at it or may be able to get a job with it, you should have it. Examples are country, jazz, rap, etc. Not necessary for everybody, but if it suits you, absolutely! (Also, SO many golden age musicals are filled with what are now jazz standards, so you can absolutely pull on those as well!)
Should I have like 30-50 songs for my rep and book? Is that normal?
Well, there is a difference between a rep book and your audition book. It’s not practical to have 50 songs that you need to keep 8, 16, and 32 bar cuts and keep them all memorized. So that’s why you pick out a few for your audition book that will cover your audition songs. For 95% of my auditions, I use one of 2 songs. I have about six others for backups and special situations. But in terms of songs I’ve worked on before that I could pull if an audition really warranted it, yes, I’d probably have 50 at least. But rarely do I pull from that pile unless absolutely necessary.
