I just made myself some new cuffs for my well worn Frnkiero hoodie and thought it'd be fun to take photos along the way. So incase anyone's interested, here's the process for my hand sewn cuff replacements.
Now, as much as the shredded original cuffs did go with my crusty look, I don't want this hoodie to die any time soon. I tend to rub at my sleeves and scrunch them in my hands so these needed reinforced before they just ceased to exist.
First I found some fleece fabric I got from a remnants bin and cut it to match the cuff length, plus seam. Then I folded it down to make a clean edge and double thickness.
Next I backstitched along the side seams and did a blanket stitch to hold the edge together. I'm really going for strength in these things.
After I ripped all the remaining stitches on the original cuffs, I pinned the new ones in, matching the seams to the hoodie and the width to each other.
I did more back stitching around where the original cuff was attached, and more blanket stitch to close up the last open edge. Finally I went back and stitched down the side seams to form a sort of overlocked seam cause I knew the seam would annoy me otherwise, and also I love making extra work for myself.
And just 6 hours of accidental hyper focus hand stitching later we have two new cuffs!
