Overconsumption has convinced us that "pricey" makeup is too much (I'm talking like $20-60 products) when honestly if you actually use your stuff and don't collect like 5 of each type of makeup you'll see that it takes FOREVER to actually use up a makeip product

If you ever do project pan or watch anyone do it you'll see just how long it takes to get through something like a blush or especially an eyeshadow palette! It can take like 2 years!!

Notes on consumerism and "ethical" consumption, by a sociology student (in no particular order)

not every product marketed as sustainable or moral actually is, there’s greenwashing, and a lot of things that are an improvement on one front have a negative impact on another: Fake leather is made of plastic, has a significantly shorter lifetime and ends up on landfills and significantly harming the environment. Things such as vegan product substitutes can be extremely helpful but if you’re not buying locally and being conscious of what you consume, not only is the environmental impact still immense but it likely originates in the exploitation of poorer countries

"Moral consumerism" isn’t accessible to all. You may lack the funds to buy locally, have a chronic illness, disability, mental illness… that makes it difficult for you to eat certain foods, to diy, or that causes you to lack the immense energy it takes to properly research and engage in the subject matter. You may lack impulse control due to adhd, bipolar disorder…. Or you may live somewhere where sustainable produce isn’t easily available 

It is okay to spend money on things that improve your life, even in trying to fight capitalism you still need to make sure you’re healthy and surrounded by things that bring you joy, just focus on consuming as little as possible, buying long lasting and if possible more sustainably sourced items, diy-ing things if you can.

Be conscious of your choices. It took until a few days ago for me to realize that yeah, hair dye is also a very chemical consumable that I don’t actually need, but keep buying. If you need dyed hair to feel confident in yourself, if it brings you significant joy, go ahead. But to me, it’s not something I really need, and I’ve decided it’s not worth buying again, even though I’ve had my hair partially dyed for the biggest part of the last three or so years. (And if, in the future, I notice my mental health or self confidence suffering from this choice, I may change my mind again)

Don’t get down on yourself if you mess up. We all give in to impulses, it’s okay if that happens even if you don’t have an illness that makes it extra difficult. Being human doesn’t make you a terrible person

These are just my own opinions. I’m not an expert, just a random person on the internet. If you can, do your own research, figure out your own thoughts and convictions. And take care of yourself!

A Great Video About Thrifting

I found this video on Youtube by a mother named Vicky Smith. While it wasn't super related to what I was researching, she provides great commentary on the growing problem in thrift/DIY centered communities.

She goes in depth on why treating second-hand shopping like a business is unsustainable, not only for the environment but as a venture in general.

What really changed my perspective was how she mentioned that people are treating thrift stores (whether online or in-person) like they're regular fashion retailers, buying up a bunch of clothes, more than what's needed or can be reasonably worn, and then using them as a dumping ground for when those clothes fall-apart or don't sit right.

Consumers are changing the way we look at thrift stores. Thrifting's mainstream popularity is an overall positive thing for society, but some customer's unrealistic mentalities STILL lead to overconsumption.

As goths and alternative people who want to see the world become a better place, it's important to understand that our buying habits influence sustainability, even if the place you're buying from is ethical.

Giving away clothes you no longer want or setting a budget can help minimize overconsumption tendencies. Or if you're like me and want to play around with fashion sometimes, learning to sew, embroider, crochet, and upcycle helps you explore creativity and create beautiful crafts/pieces for ourselves.

Rant on Capitalism, Ethical Consumption, DIY'ing, and Thrifting

I feel like one thing people forget about capitalism is that there is no fully/truly ethical consumption. Even in thrift stores, there are fast fashion clothing articles there.

On a different note of that topic, it's not just about where you buy your clothes, but also your pattern of consumption. Are you able to work with what you have? Are you constantly buying new clothes? That determines if your consumption patterns are ethical in any way.

What also comes with making it work with what you have would be DIY, which people seem to lack the fundamental understanding that just telling someone to DIY does nothing and people often don't know where to start. Therefore, give someone a starting point and basic materials to get that they would use a lot.

One thing I can also admit though is how people often don't put the work into learning how to DIY or thrift, or don't listen/ignore it when people do give them a starting place, and use that as an excuse, which obviously also is stupid, but both are two sides of the same coin in my opinion.

...you ever wonder if you care too much about ethics? Everyone else around me doesn't seem to care nearly as much as I do. When everyone else is using AI, watching whatever they want, eating wherever they want, shopping wherever they want, and not thinking about the ramifications of where their money goes, it makes me think, "Why am I always in this fight about ethical consumption? Literally no one else cares?! How can they not, look at the proof!"

Peach milkshakes and pickle brined chicken cannot be worth sending teens to conversion camps. Having a robot just make something for you cannot be worth ruining the drinking water of a town and guzzling electricity. Desire for entertainment cannot be enough to pay fascists to sit through their propoganda or overly-sanitized reboots. Getting your craft supplies can't possibly be more important than women's rights. Your childhood bedtime stories cannot be worth ruining thousands of lives.
