Seeking repentance is mandatory

Abu Huraira (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said,

“By Allah, I seek forgiveness from Allah and I repent to him more than seventy times in a day.”

Al-Agharr bin Yasar Al-Muzani (May Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

"Turn you people in repentance to Allah and beg pardon of Him. I turn to Him in repentance a hundred times a day."

The longer one is settled in sin, the more hardened the heart becomes. To the point that if one wishes to quit, one is unable. And whoever becomes weary of sinning, should increase in asking for forgiveness for it, until one’s heart softens from its lengthy settling in sin.

Simple regret has nothing to do with Tawbah...

“Simple regret has nothing to do with Tawba. Mere regret is superficial and sometimes can even be hypocrisy.

Real Tawba has three parts:

1) real [deep] regret

2) strong intention not to do it again, and

3) taking steps to correct it.

Tawba is not to say ‘astagfirullah’. You can say astagfirullah and it means nothing; you get no reward. Tawba is not to say ‘sorry’. It is to do the above three things.”

Tawbah is not by mere words...

▪ REPENTANCE IN ACTION ▪

It is reported that ‘Alī b. Ḥusayn – Allāh have mercy on him – said, “Tawbah is only through action, and turning back from what has been done. Tawbah is not by mere speech.”
