Application of Masterbatches in Injection Moulding Plastic Furniture
Injection moulding is a manufacturing process for producing parts or end products by ‘injecting’ material into a mould. Injection moulding is used most commonly in thermoplastic and thermosetting polymers, but can also be used for a host of materials like metals, glasses, elastomers and confections. Material for the part or the end product is fed into a heated barrel, mixed and forced into a mould, after which it is left to cool and hardens in the form of the mould. Thus, the product is formed in the shape of the mould.
Problems with Injection Moulding and How Masterbatches Solve Them
Products formed with injection moulding have silver streak issues (formation of silver streaks on the surface of the product). Also trapped air is a major issue, and causes bubbles as well as blisters. Trapped air can be a result of many issues such as jetting, equipment problems such as non-vented core pins or too much decompression. Water vapour or decomposing by-products can also result in air or gas being trapped in the product.
Desiccant masterbatches are the solution to these problems. These are additive masterbatches produced by most large masterbatch producers, for example REPIN Masterbatches. Desiccant masterbatches are popular as they require a proportion of only 1%-3% in the process mix, and provide outstanding results in removing the silver streaks and increasing the strength of the moulded article by eliminating bubbles of air or gas. In addition, desiccant masterbatches:
· Improve surface finish
· Eliminate porosity
· Improve strength
Application in Plastic Furniture Industry
Recycled PP is majorly used to manufacture plastic chairs, furniture and crates. This is the biggest market for recycled moulding. Recycled PP tends to cause silver streaks and breakage due to moisture which results a lot of rejection for the manufacturing companies.Just with a small dosage of desiccant masterbatches from a trusted masterbatch distributor is enough to improve the quality of the product.
