“ hey, look at me… you can do this. okay? you can. “ ( dimitri and rogue )
Looking at him at a moment like this was both difficult and, yet, it was all she wanted to do. To just... let her eyes meet his. To let the shared gaze assure her that everything was going to be okay.
"I'm terrified." Her words were soft, barely more than a whisper. Had he not been standing so close in front of her, he might have missed them.
They were 90% sure. That's what they'd said. 90%. And no more than that.
"I'm sorry. That's the best we can do." Hank's voice was still there, tapping around at the inside of her head. He'd known she was disappointed, that she was hoping for better, and the apology had been clear in not only his tone, but his expression. Because 90% left a margin of 10%. A 10% chance that they were wrong. But they couldn't know, he said, unless she just... did it. They had spent months on this, trying to figure it out, but the issue was that her mutation was unpredictable. They could make guesses, they could run tests. There was, however, only so much of it to be done, and a couple months ago, just before Christmas, they'd hit a wall. A dead end. There had been no progress since then, and it didn't seem that there ever would be.
"There's always gonna be a chance it doesn't work. It doesn't matter how long we take on it." Bruce had cut in, "But the odds look good."
And from there, it had been a matter of discussion between her and Dimitri. Away from prying eyes and ears, in the comfort of her room.
She knew that if it wasn't going to work, he would feel it quickly. The pain would only last a second, and then she could pull away. Keep him safe. He could handle it. Weaker men than him had.
But that wasn't the real issue. It was... it was the part she verbalized: "I don't want to hurt you." but it wasn't really the worst part. She was afraid for a few other reasons.
Even just a moment touching him, a single second of contact, would give her a glimpse inside his head. A look at his memories. And those were personal. They were his. She didn't want to intrude on him that way. Yes, she'd done it to others countless times before, but that didn't mean she didn't have regrets about it. It also didn't mean that people didn't behave a little differently around her once they knew that she had been in their mind, saw their memories as if they were her own, felt the things that they had felt. And that was an issue, too. What if... what if she saw herself through his eyes? Through his memories of her? What would she see? What would she feel?
Anger? Frustration? Disappointment?
And then... would he resent her if this didn't work? Would he give up? Walk away? He'd waited this long for her already, how much longer could she possibly expect him to stay if this didn't work? She couldn't ask him to stick around if their hopes were dashed. He'd voiced his concerns before about how often she was using the inhibitor, about the way she was hurting herself just for a chance to touch him. And she'd keep doing it, too, because she was stubborn, and because... she loved him. She loved him enough that she could push through it, even when her headaches grew so bad that her vision started to blur and she felt like her head might burst. She wouldn't tell him that sometimes they lasted for hours even after she took the inhibitor off. That sometimes, after he left, she would rush to her room to sit in the silence, in the dark, because every small noise, every bit of light, sent a piercing pain straight through her skull, into the backs of her eyes, even down her spine. If he knew, he'd make her stop. And she couldn't. She couldn't. She didn't want to lose him, and how long would it take for him to walk away if they had to limit their time spent touching even further? She knew he thrived on the physical affection, and, ironically enough, she did too. So how long would she be able to keep him around if they had to be more careful than they already were?
She toyed with the cuff- it wasn't around her wrist, but it was in her hands. She could put it back on right now, apologize for her cowardice. If she did, they may never know what could have happened. Would he resent her, then, for not taking a chance?
"What happens if it doesn't work?" She asked, only now looking at him like he'd told her to do. What would happen is that she'd cause him a moment of pain, and in exchange she'd gain some of his memories, maybe even his enhancements for a short time. But what she meant was... what would happen with them if it didn't work?
There were a few more moments of contemplation that followed. And not for a second of it did she drop his gaze. Not until the final moment when she finally placed the inhibitor atop her dresser, a decision made.
"If this doesn't work... try not to hate me for it, okay?"
The first time she had let her bare fingers brush the smooth skin of his cheek, it had been with excitement. It had been a thrill to show him that she could touch him. But now? Now it was with fear. Her fingers stopped just a fraction of an inch from his skin, "Are you sure?" She asked once more, just to be safe. This was his last chance to change his mind, and she supposed it was hers, too. Were they really prepared for whatever might happen?
Anna Marie held her breath.
