Perfect Report Migration in a Fraction of the Time Using Automation

When companies want to implement a new reporting technology they face a problem: they need to migrate their reports. Traditionally, this has been accomplished by manually migrating one report at a time. This would be a fine solution if there were only a few reports, but if the company has thousands of reports this becomes time-consuming and costly. Even if a team of amazing, dedicated specialists could migrate three reports per day, the traditional solution would still take over one year to complete. View BI is able to complete the same project in three months using our scripting technique: automated migration.

View BI has the ability to quickly and cost-effectively migrate thousands of reports from one report-generation technology to another, such as from Microsoft Reporting Service to IBM Cognos and vice-versa.

First we review existing reports and divide them into groups by complexity: low, medium, and high complexity, according to the type of elements, report charts, and links in the report. Both of these systems define their reports using Extensible Markup Language (XML), which we use to write scripts to migrate the reports.

After every iteration of a script we test representative samples from each group. With each iteration we improve the quality of the reports by adding new elements such as page headers, footers, and converting Reporting Services text prompts to Cognos prompt pages. Analyzing our client's reports takes about one month. Building and refining the scripts takes about two months. Once the scripts are ready, the actual migration takes mere minutes.

After the project, we provide support through our offshore team, who also provide any future report enhancements desired by our clients. Since we can provide this service in less than 25% of the time it takes our competitors, our clients save more than 75% of the overall cost of the project.
