Cap 10k brings 17,500+ runners to downtown Austin
More than 17,500 pairs of shoes hit the pavement on Congress Avenue bridge and across downtown this morning, ending with live music and food trucks at Auditorium Shores - a true Austin festival.
The 36th annual Statesman Capital 10,000, presented by H-E-B, raised more than $67,273 for Dell Children's Hospital, according to the Austin American-Statesman.
H-E-B t-shirts flooded the race in a sea of red, but other costumed participants included a 70s-themed duo, an ostrich and a banana, among many others.
The race was full of family teams, with many mother-daughter and father-son teams, as well as parents walking their babies in strollers.
The weather remained cool and slightly humid throughout the race, providing a cool break for runners: the average temperature during April in Austin is between 77 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit, according to WeatherSpark.
One 25-year-old man collapsed during the race due to cardiac arrest. Paramedics immediately tended to him and revived him within minutes. He is an unidentified college student from San Antonio that remains in the hospital.

Light at the end of the tunnel for Cap 10k racers
Judy Kogutt just finished her first Capitol 10k race and is waiting in line for a massage at the ATXRehab tent with her friend, Stephanie Prescott, a second-time Cap 10k participant.
The women had no set time goal for today's race.
"We just wanted to make it to the finish line!" Prescott said.
"We wanted to finish still on our feet," Kogutt added.

Post-race Auditorium Shores
The energy at Auditorium Shores ranges from pumping adrenaline to pure exhaustion. Runners are crossing the finish line with every second that passes. Overheard: lots of coughing, congratulations, children crying and “I’m cramping!”
