I Feel Like I’ve Known You Forever

Celeste gazed out into the wine-dark night as she clambered out of her car outside the newly-renovated hideout. She smiled to herself as the warm wind ruffled her black hair. “Hideout” wasn’t exactly the term she would use, but it was the one Felix had taken to and she had even caught Adam slipping the word into his stuffy vernacular a few times. Felix was an influence on them all it would seem. Good or bad? Truly who could tell. 

She shook her head a few times, wiped the smile from her face, and started toward the doors. This wasn’t a social call. Before she could reach the entrance, however, something pulled her toward the back of the dilapidated building. Against her better judgement, she followed the feeling. She realized her worries were for nothing as she trudged through the fallen leaves that covered the ground. A figure sat, huddled against the ground and silhouetted by the moonlight, a figure she would recognize anywhere: Mason. 

He didn’t look up as she approached, though Celeste knew he could hear her. Her mouth opened as if to say something, anything really. But she thought better of it when she saw the look on his face, beautiful features contorted with pain. Instead, she simply sat down next to him, saying nothing. Mason would tell her what was going on when he wanted to, well, if he wanted to, really. And so they sat, gazing out into the night. 

The warm air and peaceful breeze fluttering the leaves around them gave Celeste the space she needed to think. Wayhaven, the town she called home, besieged by supernaturals. It seemed as if the town’s denizens were endangered at every moment. Though, as time wore on, it became harder and harder to tell if the incidents that seemed to be increasing in number were accidents or more malicious in nature. And it truly didn’t help that Adam, her one-stop-shop for information, still wouldn’t trust her. Reflecting on the nature of her job, Celeste almost let loose a sigh. How the actual fuck was she supposed to protect everyone and, apparently, herself? Backs have broken with less weight. 

Mason shifted against her, breaking her train of thought. She almost laughed, but any chance of that happening disappeared when she turned toward him. His form looked broken against his knees and his expression, almost permanently smirking, gave her pause. Celeste thought she felt him shake where their shoulders met as he opened his mouth to say the first words either of them had said all night.

“I feel like I’ve known you forever.” That was it. One statement and he was back to staring out toward the woods. 

She studied him, wondering what had possessed him to say that. Her eyes traced his strong jawline as he turned to meet her gaze. One image would be burned into her mind, stealing both her thoughts and her breath: dark eyes, filled with fear.
