He does "FIND" training, and constantly working in a heel, sit, stay, lay, come, stop, wait, and recall. That all never ends. Especially in an under 3 yr old dog. Twice this past month he stopped - when I prefer he stop dead rather than immediately come to me which in most situations actually works better for him. I get immediate stops in all cases except rabbits. Usually. But twice this past month I got a stop and recall in chase of a rabbit. I was soooooo proud. Rabbits are something that seems to make him lose his mind. This was big. He acts bored and pouts when we do Cafe or I stand talking to a person in passing. But he will lay and be quiet at my feet. He is getting better at this as well with less pouting. But it's smart to be aware of surroundings. In fact it's not a choice as a responsible pet parent. Other dogs coming into his space while he's laying under a Cafe table is my job to keep from happening. If George is tired or cranky it's not the time for people who want to say hi (dogs aren't allowed to approach when George is on a leash) and it is my responsibility to tell people no. Even kids. Also, when on leash, dogs are supposed to be ignored as well, though that's a weakness. And parks I feel out. Case by case. I don't let George feel ganged up on. Things like this can create a dog to react and since he's been attacked ganging up on him is a thing. It's my place to watch for this and even anticipate it. George needs a firm disciplined training. But never mean training or handling. I do think if someone hit him he'd bite and I wouldn't blame him. You can't let him get away with anything even once. He needs his exercise, brain work, and love attention daily. He also needs free dog time and alone time and his nap times. I have to sometimes encourage him to play by himself. He's never been a chewer. He gets a lot of brain work training and also playtime on his own, though supervised. He gets to dig tripe filled kongs out of boxes or find his treats and food out of a half gallon milk jug while supervised. I find odd things to use to make him think or work at it. Training is daily and all day in handling a dog. Even when not hands on, there is often training. He trains to be calm when I go sit outside without him. Or to play in his own in the house at times (he's not big on that so extra encouraging since puppy hood there). Or to behave while being brushed and nails done or ears cleaned or to wait for his food or sit for a treat or Go when told or Out of the kitchen while we eat. Chows are awesome. But like any dog they need their care, training, and their people. They may act like cats and have a face of you annoying them at all times but they really love the attention. George usually looks annoyed or like he's being held hostage in photos but this is about the happiest dog ever. And he lives his cuddles and lettings and scratching. Scratch his chest and he looks really stupid. Most of the time his face looks stupid but also photos will come out in a blur. His nickname has the The Blur since adoption. I don't get many pics of him actually being a goof and playing. I do have many I don't share. And I have some videos I don't share. But he is constantly comical. Chows got a bad rep in the overbreeding popularity explosion of the breed and owners who chained dogs or threw them in the back yard and didn't interact with them or train them then allowed their children and all neighborhood children to suddenly run in the backyard with the dog, often with new puppies their female was protective of. Golden retrievers have bitten far more. He's never attacked a dog and loves other friendly buddies. He will match another dog's attitude now. Though I've always had a handle on him and he has never had the chance to get in a dog fight. He's been attacked 10 times now by large loose dogs. 2 were standard poodles (dif owners, states, times), 3 were boxers, 1 a boxer mix (he now does not like boxers), almost by 2 other boxers, 2 German shepherds, 2 lab mix. He HAS been approached by or passed loose pitbulls at least a dozen times and not once been attacked by them. A couple wanted to play and a couple just passed on. None were mean dogs.
