Guess who is in the 2022 Match class baby?!?!
Tried keeping a research journal today, since I’ve been having a hard time keeping track of what I’m working on. I always kept one in the archives, but this is the first time I’ve tried it in a “normal” work situation. We’ll see if it keeps helping!
Doing Honours
So the last time I really used tumblr I was in high school doing my HSC. I’m now writing my thesis on unemployment in Australia. Whoever thought it was a good idea for me - a serial procrastinator - to do what is a largely self-disciplined course was out of their mind....oh wait, that was me :( I should go back and kick past me in the stomach.
Atypical day in the life
7.30am: Alarm goes off. Ignore it. Bedroom may well be in the negative degrees. 9.00am: Go and get breakfast 9.30am: Get dressed in bathroom because it is literally too cold to remove clothes in bedroom. 10.00am: Leave house 10.45am: Arrive at clinic 10.50am: Identify suitable patient. Wait in office. 12.15pm: FINALLY get a chance to see the one suitable patient. She seems compliant enough (yay) 12.30pm: Amble off to library to do some work. 1.45pm: Go to meeting 1.50pm: Arrive at meeting 10 minutes early. Go for a stroll. 2.00pm: Have meeting, is quite productive. 2.50pm: Meeting finishes, walk ski home. 3.30pm: Arrive home. Go chat to housemate in living room. Watch episode of Scrubs. 3.40pm (ish): Cookies are mentioned in Scrubs episode. Me and housemate decide that we must bake some cookies. 4.00pm: Scrubs finishes, cup of tea. 4.10pm: Go to co-op to buy baking supplies. 4.30pm: Return, start baking. 5.20pm: Am not allowed to eat cookies. 5.30pm: Get phone call from friend saying that she is locked in her house. 5.35pm: Go to the rescue. 5.45pm: Arrive at friends house. Simple task of her posting the key out the letterbox and I open it. On facebook I make it sound like I'm a fucking superhero. 5.55pm: Return home. Have dinner. Finally get to eat a cookie 6.30pm: Retreat to bedroom for the first time. It's still fucking cold. Photocopy consent forms to post to patients. 6.50pm: Go on hunt for stapler. Housemate has one. 7.00pm: Am bored while photocopying so decide to make tumblr post about day so far.
Plans for the rest of the evening: email about fax number, email re: supervisors, make the referral form, go to gym, play some more rollercoaster tycoon.
Part of the club
So I'm currently in the literature search phase of my project, which pretty much involves a lot of time spent trawling through Medline and Pubmed and finding articles and reading them and trying to make my brain come to some sort of sense about it all. I also went and got a couple of books out of the library.
I was just looking at the contributor list at the beginning of the book, and realised that I recognise most of the names on there. The consultant I went to see yesterday is there. The woman he suggested I contact who works at a nearby University was one of the editors. The rest of the names I look at and it's like "I've read your articles". There's Sherwin and Coker and Espeland and loads of others. It's really weird, I've never been so expert on just one topic before, and I've only been doing it for just over a week. It feels like I'm part of this weird, oestrogen obsessed club.
Another weird thing that's happening is that the consultant I'm working with is having this email conversation with my supervisor about me, but I'm copied into all of the emails. It's like "has she definitely got ethics approval?" "yes, she has ethics approval. I have the bit of paper right here." It's all just practicalities but it's still kind of funny to witness. Haven't had any emails for a while so I think they might have stopped copying me in, which is a shame. I like watching senior doctors interact with each other.
