Acid Attack Survivor Reshma Qureshi Walks at NYFW
It doesn’t happen everyday that an acid victim survivor manages to bring their life back to normal. Even less so when the attack has left you scarred on major portions of your face. It takes a lot of courage to re-emerge from an incident like this, and we can’t not acknowledge and salute the tremendous strength in the life and experience of Reshma, a survivor who has done everything within her power to bring her life back to normal.
Reshma did something extra-ordinary this past week: she was the first Indian show stopper at New York Fashion Week, as she walked the runway for Archana Kochhar.
Archana’s show was a melange of all things banjara art along with its rustic, bohemian vibe.
Looking beautiful as ever, Reshma confidently worked the runway.
Sunny Leone, the first Bollywood celebrity to walk down the New York runway also looked stunning as ever in a mesh and ivory number.

We now take a break from your regularly scheduled Kardashian and Jenner news to bring your attention to something that truly matters (no shade, Kylie—your blonde hair was the center of my universe for three days, but we have to pause for this). An incredibly strong, empowering, brave…and every other synonym that doesn’t do her justice…acid-attack survivor walked—sorry, slayed—the runway at New York Fashion Week last night, and the entire industry tried to refrain from both hugging her and bowing down to her at the same time.

On Thursday evening, 19-year-old Reshma Qureshi opened the show for Indian designer Archana Kochhar. The only noticeable difference between Qureshi and the other veteran models in the lineup was the fact that she was missing an eye, the result of her brutal acid attack in 2014. Acid attacks are a particularly heinous crime that almost always target women and children, are almost always committed by men, and are almost always due to jealousy, rebuked marriage proposals, and all the other bullshit that makes someone think acid attacks are OK.

This wasn’t Qureshi’s first courageous act, though. Back in India, the teen is a YouTube beauty vlogger, using the platform to speak out against the sale of acid in open markets while demonstrating beauty tips and tricks. “Why should we not enjoy our lives? What happened to us is not our fault and we’ve done nothing wrong and so we should also move forward in life,” said Qureshi to Agence France-Press.

But make no mistake; Qureshi does not want your pity. “I want to tell the world—do not see us in a weak light, and see that even we can go out and do things,” she added, after she walked the runway in a floor-length gown. “People have a tendency to look at acid attack survivors from one perspective and I don’t want them to look at them like that anymore.”

Acid attack victim redefines beauty as she makes star turn at fashion show
A teenager who lost an eye and whose face was brutally disfigured in an acid attack has become a star turn on the New York catwalk. Reshma Qureshi, 19, brushed off nerves to stride the runway like a pro to the whoops and cheers of onlookers. She wore a stunning cream and floral floor-length gown by Indian designer Archana Kochhar on the first official day of New York Fashion Week. "I feel really good and the experience was great," said the teenager, who was making her first trip abroad. "I feel as though it has definitely changed my life."

The teenager was attacked by her brother-in-law in 2014, pinned down by his friends while her face was doused with acid. After she was attacked, in her Indian home town of Allahbad, she had many painful skin grafts and even considered killing herself. But then she met the founder of support group Make Love Not Scars and became the face of their online video campaign, reaching 1.3 million people. That led to her being invited by FTL Moda, a fashion production company challenging industry stereotypes of beauty to open the show in New York. Now, she hopes her story will inspire other acid attack survivors and encourage countries to regulate the sale of cheap and widely available acids.

Bold and beautiful: Acid attack victim walks the ramp at NY Fashion Week
Reshma Bano Qureshi was robbed of her happiness when her abusive brother-in-law threw acid on her face, as she was trying to protect her sister from his attack. With her face severely damaged, and blinded in one eye, Reshma’s world suddenly turned upside down, but she refused to give up; fighting off depression and suicidal thoughts, the teen decided to write her own destiny, showing unusual courage by pledging to dedicate her life to draw the attention of the people towards the atrocities faced by women in India, where acid attacks by jilted lovers or abusive husbands aren’t uncommon.
Last year, Reshma uploaded a video on youtube, titled “How to get perfect red lips” — as part of a campaign for Make Love Not Scars — an NGO focused on rehabilitation of acid attack victims. The video starts with Reshma giving makeup tips, but suddenly takes a sombre tone, calling the attention of the viewers on how easily accessible concentrated acid is on the Indian market, just like a red lipstick. She then exhorts the viewers to sign a petition to ban the open sale of acid in the country.
The video became viral, and Reshma’s fight for justice gained momentum. As a gesture of appreciation of her commendable efforts, she received an invite to walk the ramp at the New York Fashion Week, an opportunity to further spread her message, and that’s how she became the face of FTL Moda’s #TakeBeautyBack campaign.
On Thursday, she walked the ramp in an embroidered white gown, designed by Archana Kochhar. The brave young girl aced it on the ramp, showing no sign of nervousness, making a strong political statement on behalf of all the acid attack victims. With her amazing resilience, Reshma has rendered a new definition to beauty.
Reshma was joined by Bollywood actress Sunny Leone, the showstopper.
