I LOVE the world building in Resonance Solstice.

Due to an apocalyptic event (of course), resonance of morphic electric fields have made life, or at least civilization, above ground impossible.

Humans have built some sort of ... uh ... thingamabobber that can basically act as a forcefield to cancel out the effects of this apocalyptic fallout-just-not-nuclear, so people can only live and build cities within the range of these... uh. Resonant thingies. (I was “reading“ at 4x speed. Missed a few things.)

Travel and commerce between these cities? Impossible.

Unless... you make a miniature version of the thing, which is still rather large, put it on a vehicle with a large engine and propulsion system, maybe stick it on rails to stabilize it when it's rocketing at high speeds, oh, and you can add extra armored carts for freight, and some for passengers...

A train. The only way to move physically between cities is by train.

(There are probably armored car-like vehicles, but so far i think only military/important factions have them, and they're not gonna be lugging freight.)

Because the train system is so integral, it absolutely makes sense that the conductors and assistants must undergo strict and rigorous training, like at a train academy, and not just because "oh, weebs, let's have a school buddies background!"

It ALSO makes sense why you, the conductor and vital human asset, do not do the combat (although the mc sure has a knack for sticking his/her neck out), and why you MUST hire guards for the train.

Because there are apocalyptic horrors running around, yknow? And raiders who set up blockades to try to rob trains, because again, that's the only way goods are transported. Although you can ram the train through some of them, it's not all, so you need to have combatants (aka gacha time). Plus, you can earn some sidecash by acting as mercs when needed.

There's also the fact that civilization is recovered enough that new stations/posts with new thingamabobbers are popping up trying to develop into larger towns/cities ... and of course they develop along the rail lines, because the rails are lifelines for all surface life... kinda (I don't get the sand marauders).

In short, I love that the game mechanics make sense for the setting the devs developed.

There's definitely more to it, what with the underground world/civilization and friction between factions and whatnot, but I'm having fun.

Except for the fatigue meter. Please devs, make the meter decrease quicker when we level up, not just making it longer, because my guy is chronically sleep-dep and loopy. It's not a good look on him.

(Also, it has a very arknights aesthetic, which makes me happy because I'm terrible at tower defense games, so I am more than happy to get that aesthetic as a train/trading sim. Especially since I saw some of the Endfield stuff and felt that the models lost a lot of that arknights vibe. Dunno if it's the colors or the modelling, but I was getting final fantasy instead.)
