It's That Time Again: Wildfire Season is Upon Us (It never really stopped being that time.)
I wanted to put together a post of resources and advice all collected into one spot, so here we go!
And remember, just because you think you live in an area where you are safe from wildfires because "it doesn't happen here" does not mean your risk is zero. Wildfires can happen anywhere in the United States, and their prevalence is increasing. Don't be afraid, just be aware and prepared.
Watch Duty
First and foremost, no matter where you live, I HIGHLY recommend getting the Watch Duty app and turning on alerts for the area you live. It is available on Apple, Android, and just as a website. It will allow you to get push notification updates for any wildfires that start in your area, what's happening with them, evacuation information, shelter information, and more all in one spot. It is now available in all fifty states.
The basic and important functions are all free, but you can also get a paid subscription to access some other neat stuff like a flight tracker to see what the firefighting aircraft are doing, fire progression prediction models, a list of links to local emergency services radio feeds you can listen to, etc.
Local Alerts
Signing up for local alerts is also something you need to do. EVEN IF YOU WERE SIGNED UP BEFORE 2026, RECHECK THAT YOU ARE SIGNED UP. Last year the Code Red system, which was one of the most popular local alert systems, was hacked and many places have since moved to other platforms. This means you may need to sign up again even if you were signed up before.
To find out what your local alert system is and how to sign up, search for your town's emergency management information, check government websites, check local fire department websites, or ask local officials.
Mitigate Mitigate Mitigate
Wildfires are going to happen. The best way to help protect your home and/or your business is to mitigate the impact when a fire starts. Things like defensible space, keeping your roof free of combustible debris, screening vents with metal mesh, and using fire safe plants can all be the difference between saving your home and losing it.
The FireWise program is a great place to get started with mitigation, especially if you are interested in community and neighborhood scale projects.
Another great resource if you want to look at mitigation on the community scale is the trainings offered by Coalitions & Collaboratives.
Be sure to also check what resources are available in your local community. You may be able to grants or other forms of support to help with your own mitigation projects.
Prevent the Fire Before it Starts
Put your campfire all the way out. Maintain your vehicle to prevent sparks. Don't park on or against dry plants. If you are towing, make sure your tow chains aren't dragging. If you have snow chains hung on the bottom of your vehicle anywhere, make sure those aren't dragging.
Obey Fire Restrictions
Fire restrictions are generally done on a city or county level, and can be found on the associated city or county websites. Some places are better about this than others. Most areas use the same general restrictions like no open burning, no fireworks, etc., but some may have more specific restrictions you should be familiar with.
And use common sense. If it is hot, dry, and/or windy, don't do things that could start a fire.
Know How to Report a Wildfire
Reporting a wildfire, or potential wildfire, can be tricky without an address. The BEST way is to provide a latitude/longitude, which can usually be obtained on your phone by opening a map app and dropping a pin where you think the fire is, or using other place finding apps like a compass.
If that's not an option, the closest cross streets and landmarks are good. Try to give the closest town as well, even if it is a good distance away, since there are many duplicate place names so having the closest town will help narrow things down considerably.
Understand Your Insurance
I wish I had a good link for this one, but it's going to vary heavily by state. Everyone is doing something different these days, pushing different legislation, enforcing different things. The best thing you can do for yourself is to read through your current policy(ies), talk to your insurance agent, and look up ongoing reforms in your state/area. But it is better to take the time to understand these things now, ahead of fire season.
Have an Evacuation Plan
Know multiple ways out of your neighborhood AND the area where you work AND anywhere else you spend an extensive amount of time. There is a very, very good chance that in a wildfire emergency your cellphone will lose signal and you will not be able to use a GPS app. Pre-planning your evacuation route--and actually driving it a few times--can be critical.
Keep up to date paper maps in your vehicle as well, and know how to read them, in case you lose cell signal for a more extensive amount of time.
Do not attempt to drive on roads that you and/or your vehicle is not capable of. If you get stuck, that creates a much bigger issue for you, other evacuees, and responders.
If you don't drive, for reasons of disability or otherwise, make a plan with friends or family for how you will get out. If you don't have a good support system, reach out to your local fire department to see if they know of any local services that can help, or if they can just take note of your address.
Have a Go Bag Ready
Last but not least, have a Go Bag ready along with your general preparedness measures. A Go Bag is something with JUST the basics. It is not meant to be everything you could ever need, or a full survival system. It is a backpack with the necessities to get you through the first 24-48 hours of an evacuation so you can get your feet under you and figure out the rest from there.
(Full alt text for this poster below the cut.)
As the world changes, it is important to be prepared to safely and efficiently evacuate your home, potentially with little or no warning. Preparing ahead of time can help to reduce stress and anxiety, and help you evacuate safely if the time comes.
Red Level (No Warning): People | Pets | Keys. Human life matters most. If you can’t rescue your pets, let them out to give them their best chance. If evacuating by car, don’t forget your keys.
Orange Level (Less Than an Hour): Crucial Meds | Important Papers | Money | Paper Map | Pet Vaccination Records. Crucial meds and medical equipment. Papers including passports, birth certificates, medical records, etc.. Multiple forms of payment. Paper map with marked evac routes in case of signal loss. Phone. Most evac centers require vaccine records for pets to be allowed in.
Yellow Level (More Than an Hour): Photos | Hard Drives | Computers | Chargers | Irreplaceable Items | OTC Meds | Pet Supplies | Pet Food | Clothes | Weather Gear. Family photos. Hard drives and computers. Make digital backups ahead of time. Charging cords. Irreplaceable items such as collectibles and mementos. Over the counter medical supplies such as Aspirin and tampons. Pet supplies such as bowls, crates, toys, and litter. Pet food and treats. Clothes. If you are running out of time grab your laundry basket. Weather gear if needed.
Green Level (General Preparedness): Food | Water | Radio | N95 Masks | Multitool | Power Pack | Gas | Stove + Fuel | Flashlight | Toiletries | Emergency Contact Info | Bedding | First Aid | Can Opener. Easy prep, shelf-stable food. Water. Battery powered/rechargeable NOAA weather radio. N95 masks for smoke. A multitool. Rechargeable power pack for phones. Keep your car at least partially fueled at all times. Portable stove and fuel for cooking food without power. Flashlight and spare batteries. Toiletries including hair products, toothbrush and paste, etc.. Emergency contact info for friends and loved ones. Spare pillows and blankets. Dedicated first aid kit. Can opener.
Save yourself time and stress by preparing an evacuation bag ahead of time and keep it in an easy to access place. At the end of every season rotate out the perishable items within such as food, water, and medications. The more you can keep in the bag, the more time you’ll have to grab everything else. Remember, it is okay if you can’t do everything. Some preparation is better than no preparation.
If you are in the U.S.A. and experiencing disaster related anxiety call the Disaster Distress Hotline at 1-800-985-5990 for support and resources.

Heated Rivalry complete timeline for book and show (so far), with character list
This is a resource post for people who are confused or struggling with the timeline when writing, because the timeline is definitely convoluted. Updated for all of season 1.
Heated Rivalry Book Timeline:
Shane’s birthday: May 10th, 1991
Ilya’s birthday: June 15th, 1991
Pre-canon tidbits:
Since Irina dies when Ilya is 12, this places her death sometime between summer 2003 and summer 2004.
At the beginning of chapter seven, we learn that Shane had “been under intense focus since he was sixteen,” which suggests that is the age that the NHL scouts really came calling.
Prologue – October 2016 – Montreal. 25 years old.
Still haven’t discussed their feelings and still meeting at Shane’s fuck condo (rip fuck condo, you are missed).
December 2008 – Regina, Saskatchewan. 17 years old.
World Junior Hockey Championships. First meeting outside the rink while Ilya is smoking. Russia wins. “‘What’s he like?’ his mother asked. ‘Kind of a dick,’ Shane said.”
June 2009 – Los Angeles. 18 years old.
NHL draft. Ilya drafted first, Shane drafted second. Hotel gym scene. We learn that Ilya has just turned 18 the previous week, about a month after Shane turned 18, and we learn this because Shane is obsessed with Ilya.

July 2010 – Toronto. 19 years old.
CCM advertisement shoot. First hookup in the hotel.
September 2010 -- Montreal

First NHL meetup between Boston and Montreal. We learn that Hayden is also a rookie on the Voyageurs. Montreal wins, Andrei asks Ilya for money (again).
January 2011 – Nashville
First All-Stars game places them on opposite teams (Team Europe vs. Team North America), with a joint press conference before the game. By this point in their rookie seasons, Ilya has scored 38 goals and Shane has scored 41. They hook up and exchange phone numbers under “Jane” and “Lily.”
February 2011 – Montreal

Part One Ends/Part Two starts with a two-and-a-half year time skip
December 2013 – 36,000 feet over Pennsylvania.
We meet Ryan Price for the first time on a plane, and learn that this is his fourth season but Boston is his third team. He only stays in Boston for one season, and ends up in Ottawa by 2016.
December 2013 – Montreal. 22 years old.
Boston at Montreal game. Ilya sexts Shane before the game. First time at the fuck condo, which Shane has just purchased. The fuck condo is still under renovation, although the bedroom is finished (lol).
February 2014 – Sochi, Russia.
Sochi Olympics. America takes gold, Canada takes silver, Russia humiliatingly crashes and burns. Ilya attends the gala with his father, and his father’s memory issues are becoming increasingly obvious.
(off-screen) June 2014 – Boston – Ilya wins his first Stanley Cup with Boston.
June 2014 – Las Vegas
Present MVP award together, Ilya takes the selfies that he will carefully transfer to future phones for years. Ilya wins MVP. Shane shows off for him.
Part Two Ends/Part Three starts with a two-year time skip
October 2016 – Philadelphia. 25 years old (caught up with prologue).
Ilya plays a game in Philly, talks some shit, and competes with Shane from afar.
October 2016 – Montreal
Hayden shares that Jackie is pregnant with their fourth child.
October 2016 – Washington
Ilya watches the television spot of Hollander at his “five-thousand-square-foot lakefront cottage” and thinks about how he’s never seen Hollander’s home.
November 2016 – Boston
Tuna melts at Ilya’s penthouse. Ilya calls Shane sweetheart for the first time and asks him to stay and offers him ginger ale that he definitely bought specifically for Shane. They also call each other by their first names during sex for the first time, and Shane definitely does not freak out about this.
November 2016 – Montreal, Tuesday night.
JJ invites Shane to a party where he meets Rose for the first time. Maxime the bartender flirts with Shane.
December 2016 – Detroit
Ilya reacts to gossip news about Shane and Rose.
January 2017 – Boston
More paparazzi photos of Shane and Rose.
One week later (January 2017 – Montreal)
Club scene at Ultraviolet. Rose invites Shane out after the game and Ilya ends up in the same club with his teammates after Boston and Montreal play each other. Rose brings her friend Miles, who is gay and hot.
One week later (January 2017) Montreal
Rose and Shane talk, and Rose asks if Shane is gay. Rose becomes the first person (besides, well. Ilya) who Shane comes out to.
The same night (January 2017) – Boston
Ilya and Svetlana are hanging out in Boston, talking shit about players from Colorado.
January 2017 – Tampa Bay
All-Stars Game, first time they’re on the same team. Ilya learns that Shane is no longer dating Rose. Beach scene, hook up in hotel room. Haven’t texted each other in over two months at this point. Shane has hired a personal stylist, which Ilya roasts him for even though he’s delighted. When they talk, Shane tells Ilya that he thinks he might be 100% gay. Ilya shares details about his family for the first time.
February 2017 – Montreal
Shane and Ilya text about Frank Zullo and Skyping (with the possibility of phone sex). Ilya is nursing an unspecified elbow injury.
March 2017 – Boston
Shane has already won two Stanley cups at this point. Ilya has won one. Shane comes over to see Ilya before the game, which they’ve never done before. We learn that Ilya’s father is dying and Polina (his stepmother) is looking for money and keeps calling Ilya. Boston and Montreal play, Boston wins.
The next day (March 2017) – Detroit
Shane learns that Ilya has disappeared without an official explanation and didn’t fly to Nashville with his team. Shane calls Ilya and learns that Ilya flew back to Moscow after the death of his father.
Two days later (March 2017) – Buffalo
Ilya calls Shane from Moscow, and Shane offers him the opportunity to get some feelings off his chest in his native language. Ilya, in Russian, tells Shane “and on top of everything, I’m pretty sure I’m in love with you and I don’t know what to do about it.”
The next day (March 2017) – Montreal
Ilya still in Moscow. They talk about Shane’s home, which in the context of the books, Ilya has never seen. Shane asks Ilya to come to the cottage over the summer.
The next day (March 2017) – Moscow
Ilya prepares to fly back to Boston after fulfilling his family duties. He realizes that he probably will never return to Russia, and gives his Moscow condo to his brother on a whim. Ilya calls Shane and they have Skype sex for the first time. Ilya says, once again in Russian, that he’s in love.
April 2017 – Montreal
Montreal and Boston play against each other late in the season. Cliff Marlow (unintentionally) sends Shane really hard into the boards, knocking him out. He ends up in the hospital with a season-ending concussion and a fractured collarbone after scaring the shit out of Ilya.
The next morning – Montreal
Ilya visits Shane in the hospital. Shane once again asks Ilya to come to the cottage. “Haven’t you ever wanted more time?”
May 2017 – Ottawa
Ilya is in the Stanley Cup playoffs facing Scott Hunter and the Admirals. He’s playing with bruised ribs, which Yuna notices. Shane is watching from his parents’ house. His concussion is getting better, but he still has to wear sunglasses when he watches TV. He continues to text Rose, since they’re now friends.
June 2017 – Boston. Shane 26 years old, Ilya either 25 or 26.
Scott Hunter wins his first cup and kisses Kip on live television, as both Shane and Ilya watch from their respective homes. Ilya decides to come to the cottage.
Part Three Ends/Part Four starts, without much of a time skip this time.
July 2017 – Ottawa (then the cottage). 26 years old.
Shane sent Scott Hunter a supportive email, without explicitly coming out to him. Shane picks llya up from the airport to take him to the cottage for the first time. The cottage is about a two-hour drive from Ottawa. We learn that Ilya went out with Scott Hunter to “Scott Hunter Night” at a gay club in Vegas after the NHL Awards.
They bond and share details about their families, most significantly with Ilya opening up about his mother for the first time.
Ilya talks about wanting to come to Canada, and brings up marrying Svetlana for American citizenship. “All of these beautiful women and I am always wishing they were him.”
Ilya brings up the idea of switching teams, and they come up with the Ottawa plan. Love confessions. “‘Does it… does it feel like agony for you too?’ Ilya started to nod, then stopped. He shook his head slowly instead. ‘Not anymore.’”
Shane’s dad walks in on them and Shane ends up coming out to his parents, both about the gay thing and about the Ilya Rozanov of it all. They decide that they’re boyfriends and all that.
They talk and we learn that the earliest Ilya would arrive in Ottawa is fall 2018, after the 2017-2018 season is complete and he becomes a free agent once his contract with Boston expires.
Epilogue – sixteen months later, Montreal (December 2018). 27 years old.
Ottawa and Montreal play against each other. Hayden already knows about their relationship at this point. Shane and Ilya hold a press conference to announce the creation of the Irina foundation.
Heated Rivalry Show Timeline
So far, the first two episodes seem to map pretty neatly onto Part One and Part Two of the book. Episode Three covers essentially all the events of the first book in the series, Game Changer, except for the ending where Scott wins the Stanley Cup and kisses Kip on the ice.
Interestingly, the timeline on Scott and Kip’s relationship seems to have been moved up, since in the show it takes place before the Sochi Olympics rather than during the 2016-2017 season, as in the book. We don't really get confirmation of their relationship timeline, but it's clear that they're together and that Kip's dad knows by the Cup finals in June 2017.
Significant deviations in the show, so far:
Shane doesn’t have the fuck condo (rip fuck condo)
Svetlana is a friend from home, not a friend from Boston
Yuna has more of a managerial role, and we learn more about Shane's endorsement deals (Reebok, Rolex) but also address his status as a role model more explicitly
Andrei got renamed to Alexei
Name changes (probably for copyright reasons):
World Juniors -> International Prospect Cup
National Hockey League (NHL) -> Major League Hockey (MLH)
Boston Bears -> Boston Raiders
Montreal Voyageurs -> Montreal Metros
Lady Byng Memorial Trophy -> Lord Talon Award for Most Sportsmanlike
Conn Smythe Trophy -> MVP
Episode One:
December 2008, Regina, Saskatchewan, International Prospect Cup #1
Six months later (June 2009), Major League Hockey Draft, Los Angeles
Compete in the hotel gym on exercise bikes, not treadmills
Six months later (December 2009), Ottawa, International Prospect Cup #2
Six months later (June 2010), Toronto, CCM ad shoot and first hookup
Rinkside scene establishes that Yuna has more of a managerial role
Scene of Yuna running into Ilya in the elevator is added (love it)
Three months later, Montreal (September 2010)
Shane’s meal with his parents is additional scene, even if we do get this timestamp in the book
Game (no timestamp, probably still October 2010 like the book)
Show coach names: Montreal Metros - Desjardins, Boston Raiders – Reilly
Andrei calls asking for $20,000 and there’s a crying baby in the background – a detail not from the book, I think intended to imply that Andrei fucked around and found out
Four months later, Nashville, All-Star Game (probably January 2011)
They discuss anal sex for the first time, but don’t actually have it until much later than in the book because the February 2011 Montreal hook-up scene gets snowed out in the show
Two weeks later – Boston airport/Montreal/Ilya’s apartment (probably February 2011)
Hayden and Jackie are already married with at least one kid at this point, even though they haven’t met yet in the books (they meet at 21 and marry within a year). Hayden also seems slightly older, even though in the books this is also Hayden’s rookie season
Svetlana waiting in Ilya’s apartment is an added scene
Four months later, Las Vegas (probably June 2011)
Scott Hunter seems to have been aged up a bit, and the degree to which he clocks Hollanov is added. And very funny.
They cut the girls talking to Shane in the elevator, which makes the rooftop feel a little more private
Episode Two:
We don’t get anything between June 2011 and December 2013 in the book, so the whole opening sequence to “mangetout” is purely show. And very cute.
Summer 2011, off-season in Montreal and Moscow
We get the impression from the book that they don’t really text much. I’m glad that we got to see them flirting back and forth more explicitly.
Fall 2011, Boston at Montreal
“What’s a girl to do on a lonely night in Montreal?
Winter 2012, Montreal at Boston
“Want to come while you’re in Boston?”
Spring 2012
Ilya in playoffs, Shane watching
Fall 2012
Shane rooming with Hayden, Ilya sends a dick pic (lol)
Winter 2013 (must be January or February)
“I’m going to score 9 goals next week.”
Spring 2013
“If Boston wins this round I get to fuck you next fall. Deal?”
Fall 2013, Boston at Montreal
Ilya at Shane’s condo corresponds with December 2013 timestamp from the book, which is their first time at the fuck condo
Montreal wins 4-3
They’d already been having anal sex for like two years at this point in the book, but I like this timeline better lol
Winter 2014, Sochi Olympics
Since Svetlana is not a friend from home in the book, she doesn’t show up at the Olympics, although we do get the scene with Ilya’s father. Also, we never see Sasha on screen in the book.
We get that Svetlana is a childhood friend and the daughter of a minister, and it kind of seems like she knows about Ilya and Sasha, but we’re not entirely sure
I like that Sasha is taller than Ilya.
Spring 2014 – Montreal (should really be June, for the cup…)
Added scene, although we do know that Ilya wins the cup in the book and it makes sense that Shane would be watching
Summer, Las Vegas – Major League Hockey Awards
other than the name of the awards, very faithful
Episode Three
I’m not gonna bother to do a play-by-play on this because I get the impression that no one cares very much. Also there are simply less timestamps in this episode. RIP Scott Hunter, the show has made you a little less boring but you are still very boring.
We start in February 2014 and jump back to “four months ago,” which is probably October/November 2013, which is just before Ilya’s first visit to Shane’s condo in December 2013.
Given that timeline, that would put the game against Rozanov and the fight with Hollander somewhere in Winter 2013/2014
Since in the book, Skip’s whole story takes place over the course of one season, and it’s the season that the Admirals win the Cup (2016-2017), that means we have an unexplained gap between 2013 and 2017 (the Admirals win the cup in 2017 as in the book, which majes sense because it’s a significant milestone in Shane and Ilya’s relationship).
Episode 4

Boston, no timestamp (presumably November 2016 like the book)
Hotel scene with Hayden and Shane, "Lily's just a friend?"
Tuna melts at Ilya's home, which appears to be a freestanding structure surrounded by trees rather than a penthouse. Unclear where in Boston this is supposed to be, clearly not in the middle of the city because it's surrounded by trees (probably a filming location in Canada lol). It seems like Shane comes over early in the day and they nap, before eating tuna melts for dinner. Shane freaks out and leaves rather than staying the night.
They have an afternoon game the next day, and then Shane heads on a road trip to Tampa and Sunrise, Florida, then Dallas and St. Louis.
Watch game with Ryan Price on TV. At this point, Price is playing in Buffalo

No timestamp, Boston workout room
Ilya stubs his toe and definitely isn't freaking out
Montreal, Two Weeks Later (probably January 2017 like the books)
Boston vs. Montreal Game, Shane and Ilya largely ignoring one another. Montreal wins 1-0, listless game where both Shane and Ilya play badly
Shane calls Rose "babe" via text but she can't attend the game because she's still shooting. She asks him to meet at club called Ciel after the game
Ilya in his hotel room having his shirtless emo moment, then gets his teammates to go out to the club with him
Club scene *needle drop on all the things she said x2*
Rose goes back to Shane's condo, Ilya ends up back in the hotel room alone but leaves the door to the bathroom open while he showers????? (his poor teammate lol)
Episode 5

KIP'S BIG POST OF THINGS TO MAKE THE INTERNET & TECHNOLOGY SUCK A LITTLE LESS
Post last updated November 23, 2024. Will continue to update!
Here are my favorite things to use to navigate technology my own way:
A refurbished iPod loaded with Rockbox OS
(Rockbox is free, iPods range in price. I linked the site I got mine from. Note that iPods get finicky about syncing and the kind of cord it has— it may still charge but might not recognize the device to sync. Getting an original Apple cord sometimes helps).
Rockbox has ports for other MP3 players as well.
This Windows debloater program (there are viable alternatives out there, this one works for me). It has a powershell script that give you a little UI and buttons to press, which I appreciate, as I'm still a bit shy with tech.
Firefox with the following extensions:
- Consent-O-Matic (set your responses to ALL privacy/cookie pop-ups in the extension, and it will answer all pop-ups for you. I can see reasons to not use it, but I appreciate it)
- Facebook Container ("contains" Meta on Facebook and Instagram pages to keep it from tracking you or getting third party cookies, since Meta is fairly egregious about it)
- Redirect Amp to HTML (AMP is designed for mobile phones, this forces pages to go to their HTML version)
- A WebP/AVIF image converter
- uBlock Origin and uBlacklist, with the AI blacklist loaded in to kill any generative AI results from appearing in search engines or anywhere.
Handbrake for ripping DVDs— I haven’t used this in awhile as I haven’t been making video edits. I used this back when I had a Mac OS
VLC Media Player (ol’ reliable)
Unsplash & Pexels for free-to-use images
A password manager (these often are paid. I use Dashlane. There are many options, feel free to search around and ask for recs!). There is a lot that goes into cybersecurity— find the option you feel is best for you.
Things I suggest:
Understanding Royalty Free and the Creative Commons licenses
Familiarity with boolean operators for searching
Investing in a backup drive and external drive
A few good USBs, including one that has a backup of your OS on it
Adapter cables
Avoiding Fandom “wikias” (as in the brand “Fandom”) and supporting other, fan-run or supported wikis. Consider contributing if its something you find yourself passionate or joyful about.
Finding Forums for the things you like, or creating your own*
Create an email specifically for ads/shopping— use it to receive all promotional emails to keep your inbox clean. Upkeep it.
Stop putting so much of your personal information online— be willing to separate your personal online identity from your “online identity”. You don’t owe people your name, location, pronouns, diagnoses, or any of that. It’s your choice, but be discerning in what you give and why. I recommend avoiding providing your phone number to sites as much as possible.
Be intentional
Ask questions
Talk to people
Remember that you can lurk all you want
Things that are fun to check out:
BBSes-- here's a portal to access them.
Neocities
*Forums-- find some to join, or maybe host your own? The system I was most familiar with was vbulletin.
MMM.page
Things that have worked well for me but might work for you, YMMV:
Limit your app usage time on your smartphone if you’re prone to going back to them— this is a tangible way to “practice mindfulness”, a term I find frustratingly vague ansjdbdj
Things I’m looking into:
The “Pi Hole”— a raspberry pi set up to block all ads on a specific internet connection
VPNs-- this is one that was recommended to me.
How to use computers (I mean it): Resources on how to understand your machine and what you’re doing, even if your skill and knowledge level is currently 0:
This section I'll come back an add to. I know that messing with computers can be intimidating, especially if you feel out of your depth. HTML and regedits and especially things like dualbooting or linux feel impossible. So I want to put things here that explain exactly how the internet and your computer functions, and how you can learn and work with that. Yippee!
MOQAIers, stop using closed symbols as "aesthetics" in your posts.
[PT: MOQAIers, stop using closed symbols as "aesthetics" in your posts. End PT]
Since racism in MOQAI has been a topic more recently, I want to add this. This is not the first time this has been brought up[?] in this community, but I feel it is relevant now so I'm bringing up again. These symbols are not just aesthetics for you to use, and treating it as such is really disrespectful to those that belong to those cultures. You are not a horrible person f you've used these symbols before and didn't know, of course not. However, if you've accidentally done something racist, then you should better yourself and learn to not make that mistake again.
In fact, our own host has been guilty of this when making discord servers. Fae's used closed symbols in channel names, but it was pointed out by someone that these were closed and our host was given resources to check the unicode of a symbol to see where it comes from. Our host didn't question it, and immediately corrected fae's mistake by changing the symbols used in the channel names.
This problem does not apply to just this community, and is all across Tumblr. Especially in "aesthetic" communities like the editblr community. If you use symbols as part of your layout for posting and you have not checked them, please do. It is likely that closed symbols are present in it, and you can very easily correct it. Especially if you got the symbols from a site like This One (a common one we see), which seems to not have much regard for this problem.
To check the unicode of a symbol, you can use This Website, which seems to be the go-to for a lot of people. You simply copy and paste your symbol into the text box and press 'inspect', it tells you stuff such as the code, the name of the symbol, and what unicode block it comes from [the unicode block is important as it easily tells you if it comes from a specific culture.]
There's also a list of some carrds and such that contain non-closed symbols. I'd still check these beforehand with the unicode checker though, as sometimes people can make mistakes.
This Carrd in particular states what closed language symbols are, the issue, some commonly used ones, etc.
Non-Closed Symbols Carrd #1
Open Symbols Carrd
Non-Closed Symbols Carrd #2
Again, check anything with the unicode checker first, the symbols in the Carrds above are not 100% guaranteed to be open.
Feel free to add any more resources if you know of them!!
Using these symbols may seem as "not a big deal" to some people, but it can really water down and disrespect a culture. Especially as language can be a big part of them, a lot of these symbols may have significant cultural and / or religious meanings.
If anyone is part of a culture that often has their symbols used for aesthetics, feel free to add your own input. We are personally not, and would love to hear some insight!
This may not be the most coherent, we are slightly blurry, so excuse that.

No harassment of any participants for any reason.
All fanworks should be new for this event— although, they need not be complete! Please feel free to continue working on them, if you feel inspired.
Subjects that could be potentially disturbing (violence, gore, non/dub-con, death, abuse, etc.) and NSFW must be tagged. The mod team will not be adding additional content tags this year, so any work not tagged appropriately will not be reblogged until the OP has included appropriate tags.
This event will not tolerate any disparagement of characters or people based on gender identity, race, religion, sexuality, or other traits.
This is a celebration of human creativity in fandom! Please don't use generative AI apps (ex: ChatGPT, MidJourney) to generate any text, images, or art assets for this challenge. Plagiarism will also not be tolerated.
Unfortunately I have been very, very busy these past few months, with work and college, and so I had to make the decision to prioritize work over making silly drawings. :(
But, as a apology for my absence, I come bearing a gift; a brand, spanking new Thunderclan family tree, rewritten from the ground up!
Yes I know I already did this two years ago, but there has been a lot of additional warrior cats content written in those two years, and with it comes many new cats to try in work in (thank you Stormclan's Folly!).
My general mindset on how I make family trees has changed as well! I realized that a lot of my old ones could be... incomprehensible at times, and my old Thunderclan tree was very much guilty of this. I now realize that most people won't be able to recognize characters based off of design alone, especially since many designs were changed, and I should have originally included the characters names too. And so, I decided to fix all of that with the new tree!
I'm very proud of this one, it took about 2 months of work to complete and a lot of scrounging around for characters, so much so that I resorted to the method of; "Well if this character isn't actually named but mentioned in the story, then technically that makes them a separate character..." Which is what happened with characters like Cicadaleap, Snifflekit, and Wiltkit (all of whom are some of the unnamed kittens present in Into the Wild).
Like the last tree: this is a free community resource anyone can use!!! While it does include many of my headcannons and changes, it's also free to change and build upon! Go nuts!!
Also; something that I forgot to add in the key is that if a cat has an * next to their name, it means they appear more than once on the family tree!
I may make some more for the other clans in the future, so stay tuned for that!!
