That said!!!! I think Gilbert is amab nonbinary, leaning more toward bigender as the idea settles in my head. But I don't think he knows he is until maybe the 1920's, and like with all things uses the most batshit series of words to explain it if he even bothers to. It'd be closer to the 90's before he's able to say something along the lines of him being a woman sometimes. With how much stock he's put into the toxic masc celibate gay man schtick he's had going on for hundreds of years, it probably isn't something he's willing to come out about until he's ready to be in everyone's face about it instead.
Basically, I think he's a mess, but he is my favorite mess.
