❝    you’re so good to him  ...    ❞   she can’t help from beaming,  not at all embarrassed that she’s been caught staring a few times whenever peter  —   this other version of peter parker   —  was scolded or reprimanded gently by uncle ben.    uncle ben,   mj thinks,   remembering the few photos aunt may would have them hanging up.   she knows it’s   -   a lot for her own peter to take in,   which was why he’d stepped out,   aunt may of this universe following.    mj lets them have their moment.

          she’d   been   mulling   over   it   all   day.   at   this   moment,   she   was   leaning   against   the   kitchen   counter   with   arms   crossed   &   her   bottom   lip   pulled   between   her   teeth,   the   reason   for   being   in   the   kitchen   in   the   first   place   completely   forgotten.   the   sound   of   her   husband’s   voice   pulls   her   from   her   reverie,   and   she   tries   to   wipe   that   look   from   her   face   completely.   she   takes   a   breath,   sets   her   lips   in   a   line   she   hoped   didn’t   look   too   stoic.   she   wasn’t   one   to   keep   things   from   him,   though.   while   she   wished   her   worries   were   silly,   unfounded            there   was   a   pit   in   the   center   of   her   chest   that   told   her   otherwise.       ❛ he’s   lying   to   us,   ben. ❜       sneaking   out,   coming   home   with   injuries   that   certainly   didn’t   make   sense   with   the   stories   he   was   telling.   she   didn’t   want   to   be   the   guardian   that   kept   his   teenage   years   from   him,   but   the   family   they’d   created   had   never   made   any   room   for   deceit.    she   shakes   her   head   in   the   slightest,   moves   her   glasses   to   the   top   of   her   head   to   keep   her   hair   from   her   face,   and   dispels   a   heavy   sigh.       ❛ he’s   never   lied   to   us.   he   doesn’t   lie.   maybe   it’s   that          that   internship,   or   something   at   school,   but  .  .  .  i’m   just   worried   about   him.   i   don’t   like   it   when   he             pushes   us   away. ❜

𝐼𝑇 𝐼𝑆 𝑊𝐸𝐼𝑅𝐷 𝑇𝑂 𝑀𝐴𝐾𝐸 𝐷𝐼𝑅𝐸𝐶𝑇 𝐸𝑌𝐸 𝐶𝑂𝑁𝑇𝐴𝐶𝑇 𝑊𝐼𝑇𝐻 𝐼𝑇.    /      @responsiben​

𝐄𝐃𝐃𝐈𝐄’𝐒  𝐒𝐄𝐄𝐍  𝐀  𝐋𝐎𝐓  𝐎𝐅  𝐖𝐄𝐈𝐑𝐃  𝐒𝐇𝐈𝐓  𝐈𝐍  𝐇𝐈𝐒  𝐋𝐈𝐅𝐄,  much  less  in  the  course  of  the  last  couple  years.  Part’ve  that  is  the  nature  of  his  job  and  the  kind  of  issues  he’d  report  on  ——  another  part  is,  well,  the  whole  alien  thing.  Different  kinds  of  weird,  sure,  but  it  builds  up  a  certain  kind’ve  ——  resilience.  And  so,  there’s  not  much  that  gets  under  his  skin  these  days,  at  least  when  it’s  reserved  to  the  extraordinary.  

“  Aw,  I  dunno  ——  ”  He  crinkles  his  brows  at  the  little  kid’s  toy  sitting  on  the  sale  rack  in  the  line  of  this  gas  station  he  feels  like  he’s  been  in  line  for  about  eighty  years  ——  y’know,  one’ve  those  pieces  that  touches  the  uncanny  valley  just  enough  to  be  weird  and  just  a  little  unsettling,  and  he  blinks  once.  “  Uh.  Okay.  Yeah,  yeah,  it’s  weird.  ”  

(  His  other,  for  what  is  worth,  just  makes  a  crackling  scoffing  noise  that’s  between  disgust  and  amusement.  )

Eddie  chances  a  glance  over  towards  the  shopkeeper  to  make  sure  they’re  busy,  and  surreptitiously  reaches  over  and  just  ——  turns  the  thing  around  to  face  the  other  way,  and  it  makes  a  raucous  squeaking  noise  that  tries  to  mimic  a  baby’s  cry,  and  he  makes  a  face.  “  Jesus  christ,  it  makes  noises.  Who  buys  these  things.  ”

         SHE   COULDN’T   LIE.   surprises   always   gave   her   that   nervous,   anxious,   thrilling   flutter   in   the   pit   of   her   stomach.   it   was   a   bittersweet   sort   of   feeling.   she   wasn’t   a   patient   woman,   despite   her   best   efforts,   but   she   loved   the   idea.   she   loved   that   she   had   been   on   his   mind.   that,   too,   might   have   contributed   to   the   butterflies   running   rampant   within   her.       ❛ okay,   okay! ❜       she   places   her   glasses   on   top   of   her   head,   pushing   her   hair   back   from   her   face,   and   closes   her   eyes   tightly.   for   emphasis,   she   covers   them   with   her   hands   just   to   ensure   that   she   wouldn’t  peek.       ❛ good   surprise   or   bad   surprise?   it’s   not   gonna   scare   me,   is   it? ❜

          SHEER   CHAOS.   that   was   putting   it   kindly.   monday   mornings   were   always   a   bit   unpredictable,   but   everything   that   could   have   gone   wrong   on   this   particular   morning   did.   peter’s   alarm   hadn’t   gone   off   &   his   rush   to   get   ready   sounded   roughly   like   a   stampede   of   elephants   running   across   old   floors.   hot   water   hadn’t   lasted   very   long,   so   cold   showers   were   in   store   for   everyone.   there   was   one   right   thing   about   this   monday,   though                   this   was   the   first   monday   ben   had   been   home   since  .  .  .   the   incident.   she   was   pouring   a   cup   of   coffee   for   the   two   of   them   for   the   second   time   ( she’d   spilled   the   first;   don’t   bring   it   up )   when   peter   comes   rounding   out   from   his   room   &   zipping   through   the   kitchen.   he   bids   fast   &   fumbled   goodbyes,   i   love   yous   &   promises   to   be   home   after   decathlon   practice.         ❛ hey,   i   need   you   to   stop   by   the   shelter   after   school   ple         ❜       words   are   cut   off   by   the   slamming   of   the   door.       ❛         love   you,   too. ❜       she   mumbles,   words   mingling   with   a   sigh.   

          she   walks   the   two   mugs   over   to   where   ben   is   seated   on   the   couch    &   places   them   on   the   coffee   table.   she   moves   to   sit   on   the   edge,   afraid   to   jostle   him,   when   he   speaks.   it   makes   her   laugh,   genuinely   &   abruptly   laugh,   and   she’s   looking   back   to   him   with   glinting   eyes.    this   certainly   wasn’t   the   quiet   she   was   sure   he   had   in   the   hospital .  .  .  but   this   was   their   normal.   HOW   CLOSE   HE’D   COME   TO   LOSING   THIS.   how   close   they’d   come   to   losing   him.    she   doesn’t   register   when   her   eyes   turn   from   amused   to   tearful,   but   she’s   met   with   a   warm,   heavy   sort   of   hit   to   her   chest.   she   reaches   out   with   gentle   fingers   to   touch   the   side   of   his   face,   lips   upturned   sweetly.       ❛ we   missed   you.   i   missed   you. ❜
