Saw the US restaged tour production
The good:
Christine was way cute.
Quentin Oliver Lee was tall. So tall. So large. And he had a nice, powerful voice.
Fireballs.
The chandelier drop was fantastic.
The rotating stage was at times cool.
“Far-reaching”!!
Trio!
The managers rocked every moment on stage.
The whole “insolent boy” part. Lee was fantastically snarly here.
Lots of interaction between Christine and Madame Giry. She obviously looked up to and depended upon the older woman.
The entire chorus. Everyone was so good and on point. Lots of little moments.
The bad:
Phantom’s sloppy wig.
No red scarf.
New locket was stupid.
The blindfold - wut.
Moving a candelabra for no reason.
Christine went to sleep instead of fainting.
Christine didn’t take off the mask - he took it off himself and she just picked it up.
Too much groping during PoNR. And there was a weird moment when he took off his gloves and trapped her from behind.
She only kissed him once and then gave him a giant hug.
He didn’t say “Christine, I love you” to her face - she overheard him with Raoul instead.
No throne in which to disappear. Meg grabs him and he falls through a trapdoor.
Raoul was utterly unlikeable.
All in all, so glad I went! It’ll be interesting to see how long these changes last and what they decide to do next.
