3 in 4 Canadians dining out less amid rising costs: Restaurants Canada report. 65% of Canadians are replacing a traditional meal with a snack at least once a month, says Restaurants Canada.
Quite unbelievable! 😔 @restaurantscanada @ctvtoronto And what's more, as this article states: "In Toronto, indoor dining has been prohibited since the province went into lockdown last November." https://toronto.ctvnews.ca/ontario-is-the-only-place-in-north-america-where-indoor-dining-isn-t-allowed-1.5493159 Reposted from @restaurantscanada #Ontario is the ONLY jurisdiction in North America where indoor dining is still closed. #restaurantscanada #toronto #ontario #ontariocanada #canada #covid19 #pandamic #noindoordining #covidrestrictions (at Ontario Canada) https://www.instagram.com/p/CQ6uW5vJ7li/?utm_medium=tumblr
The Domino Effect
Our Canadian hospitality industry was once upon a time, a thriving, energetic place that employed over a million people in over 100,000 locations and generated $93 Billion in revenue. COVID is breaking the backbone of our society in so many ways but our restaurants deserve better. It has been estimated that it could take until 2022 to regain the status of 2019 sales. The hospitality industry could lose upwards of $40 million in 2020. Restaurants Canada believes that 260,000 people remain unemployed as we near the end of the year. Think for a moment what the impact is on all of us if a restaurant fails.
Staff become unemployed •More strain on the government for support – higher taxes? •Less use of transit options – increases costs & taxes •Greater strain on health care system – stress / anxiety Debt load increases •Suppliers / Landlords / Financial institutions can’t recover losses •Storefronts sit empty – less property tax, less business tax •Creates municipal shortfalls in revenue Supply chain becomes stressed – creating potential business failures •Food suppliers suffer losses •Beverage suppliers suffer losses / Draught service businesses fail •Farmers suffer losses
We need to find ways of supporting our hospitality industry.
