Restored - Part 14
Setting Your Mind
Our thoughts are a spiritual battlefield. Our thoughts will direct our feelings and our feelings will direct our behavior. Every move we make, every word we speak begins as a thought. This is what motivated David to write in Psalms 19:14, “May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight…” David understood that it all begins with our thoughts.
Today’s scripture teaches us a powerful truth about how to take control of our thoughts. According to Romans 8:5, we need to set our minds on what the Spirit desires. We are not to be passive bystanders when it comes to our thinking. We need to have a set mind! We are to set our mind on the things of God.
This is Christian meditation. Eastern mediation is an attempt to empty one’s mind. The goal of Christian meditation is to fill one’s mind with thoughts of Christ. Jesus is our True North. When we set our minds on him, our motivations, attitudes, words, and actions will all begin to reflect God’s restorative power working in our hearts.
Psalm 19:14 (NKJV) 14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart Be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer.
Romans 8:5-17 (NKJV) 5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. 6 For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. 8 So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His. 10 And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
Sonship Through the Spirit
12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors—not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” 16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.
PRAYER
For your prayer time today, spend some time meditating on Christ.. You may want to use scripture as a starting point. Focus on Jesus.. Ask Him to fill your heart and mind and ask Him to help you set your thoughts on Him throughout the day today..
Trust
As a little girl I would tie balloons around my wrist "To keep them safe," I said. At home, they'd wilt day by day sinking lower and lower until I'd have to brave the POP! from my scissors. I tied myself to the wrong wrists, unknowing like those balloons that those homes I entered would never see me leave. I tied myself to those wrists who would try to keep me safe, would try to keep me from flying beyond their reach. I decided to cut the strings myself to risk seeing the sun and falling. (It has always been worth it to fly) Months later, I still wonder how they fare, wilting under those wrists from whom they cannot be freed.
