As a keen biking enthusiast, any restaurant that has a Boris Bike dock outside is an automatic winner! Having cycled from Elephant and Castle, up through Waterloo across the bridge and over the Strand, it was the first independent (or at least I thought) place we came across. My friend had recommended Bill’s to me a number of times, so I thought I would give it a go. What seems like a 20 seat café, actually opens up to a vast space, decorated in a shabby chick style, a mix between French and Italian. It caters for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner, with an array of dishes that you would find in most London haunts (the naked burger, fish finger sandwich etc..), however they also offer a number of individual dishes such as pearl barley risotto with smoked mozzarella and tomato, with a side of broccoli with red chilli and toasted sesame seeds. I digress… Breakfast too has a good menu, with the usual full English (bubble and squeak was a nice addition), a healthy breakfast board or poached eggs. I went for Eggs Benedict, Coop for Royale, one latte, one cappuccino and two orange juices. Drinks came first, with food following shortly after. The breakfast was good, well presented and filling. Poached eggs were cooked for the right amount of time and the hollandaise sauce had the perfect consistency. If I had one criticism to make (and it’s taken some digging to find!), it was that the muffin was quite hard. Pumpkin seeds were a welcome (and unexpected) addition on top that added a more unique flavour. The ham was freshly sliced and particularly tasty. Orange juice freshly squeezed and the coffee a good strength. The staff were particularly pleasant, with some good banter with our waitress about where we were off to next, leaving her to recommend us trying a few more Bill’s. There are actually 23 Bill’s across the South of England, however you wouldn’t know so. It has managed to succeed in keeping an independent feel that many of us still welcome. Good food and ambience, perfect for a weekend breakfast. It has enticed me back for dinner.
