Corea’s ability to transform almost everything he touches almost rivals that of his onetime employer [Miles] Davis, a man now – long after his death – known for being personally difficult to some people, along with artistically singular in jazz history. Neither Davis nor Getz, in fact, is now known for having been a day at the beach.“

My view of life,” says Corea now, “is that life and living together in the human race is ALL far from perfect. In fact, that’s a very mild way of putting it. I’ve learned from a very early age to keep my attention focused on the music. I worked with Stan Getz first, I worked with Miles after that. The experiences were extraordinary. Especially with Miles, because I grew up with his music. To me he was all about music. Then, on a personal level, I was a young guy in his 20s and Miles was already an idol in music. And he treated me like a son or like a nephew. Took me under his wing. He was very, very helpful and always kind. I never had a ruffle with Miles personally. It was a glorious relationship.”
