i am frequently intoxicated with the beauty of this earth...iceland was like being plunged into a fever dream. the mingling of enchantment & treachery in the landscape clobbered me. and I have been thinking a lot on what our place in nature is, and what we can do to give back and to protect these wild places. sentience is not a free pass to dominance, however the consumer market or some of our shortsighted leaders may tell us. we need not only to respect nature, but to pay homage to it. there is an much more eloquent piece by robin wall kimmerer about this...she writes, '"Though we live in a world made of gifts, we find ourselves harnessed to institutions and an economy that relentlessly asks, "What more can we take from the Earth?” This worldview of unbridled exploitation is to my mind the greatest threat to the life that surrounds us. Even our definitions of sustainability revolve around trying to find the formula to ensure that we can keep on taking, far into the future. Isn’t the question we need, “What does the Earth ask of us?”' ...the link to this beautiful questioning is in my profile.
