Inktober day 24. Prompt was "blind". While i appreciate the illustrative and figurative potential in the theme, i was thinking about the tendency to appropriate blindness for a naively ableist narrative, and thought instead I'd draw Blind Reverend Gary Davis. He looks younger here than in the videos from his rediscovery in the 60s, but hey, we were all young once. Davis was one of the old bluesmen sought out by the hippie rock stars of the 60s, among them my guitar teacher's teacher, Jorma Kaukonen (hope i spelled that right), so i do sometimes think of Davis as part of my 'lineage' a bit... But that's a bit cheeky of me, given I only studied with my teacher (Jim Steinke) a couple years in high school, and, well, then there is the usual narrative of white kids appropriating black music as a way of adding a sheen of 'authenticity' to their privilege, so let's just say i have a warm spot in my heart for Davis, but won't pretend I'm a significant bit of HIS narrative... And sorry for the extended commentary, i'm getting ready to teach a Jan term course on, among other things, the ways we construct heritage and authenticity, so it's on my mind. Incidentally, i was doodling this during the second half of trivia night at the pub.
