As the sun sets on another #LaborDay, I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the power music to shed light on so many things. It's a tool for activism, a tool for change. Such was the importance of the #MerleTravis composition "Sixteen Tons" that a Kentucky monument was erected for him in 1956. I tried to research if it's still standing. Couldn't find any info on that. . Merle Travis first recorded the song in 1946. . #TennesseeErnieFord's hit 1955 version sparked countless covers in all kinds of styles. . Travis also wrote another song about coal mining conditions called "Nine Pound Hammer" which also enjoyed multiple cover versions. .
