I got to spend this weekend at Clicker Expo 2017 in Portland and let me tell you it was worth EVERY PENNY. I learned so much and I have so many ideas for how to be better and teach better. Also I met a 13 year old Great Dane??

Malu has had trouble with paw handling in her past. It was to the point she would become aggressive and a groomer stopped seeing malu. Dogs typically don't like their paws handled let alone the same way groomers handle them (I.e spreading the toes, putting pressure on the paws, the vibration of the dremel on the nails, etc). With her first owners they never even tried paw handling of any kind and took Malu to the vet where they would sedate her for nail trims. Some time during her first part of her life with her first owners she associated her paws being handled with negativity. However, with her current owners and using positive reward based methods. She is a rockstar at the groomers now! This is a short clip of one of our quick sessions. This is where we are at now. I cue her to stand. Once she stands I pickup, hold, and play with her toes. During the time I even touch her legs she is receiving treats from my hand. This is like the open bar closed bar method. As long as I am touching, picking up, and handling her legs/paws/toes she is getting treats. When the treats are gone the session is over. If she pulls away then the treats go away too. We didn't start here. At first it was just me lightly touching her arm while treating her, stopping, repeating. Eventually leading to the mid arm, paws, toes, etc. It took a few months due to a few sessions a week. Now Malu will happily offer you her feet even if you want to check her toes for burrs. We still have a ways to go but I'm proud of Miss Malu! #rewardbasedtraining #r+trainer #rplustrainer #rplustraining #cooperativecare #forcefree #dogtraining #dogtrainer #nailcare #airedaleterrier #doglover #dogsitter #dogwalktoo#dogtrainingstudent (at Osceola, Indiana) https://www.instagram.com/p/CUJP588lrDm/?utm_medium=tumblr
Max did great today during our walk. Less grass eating and way less stopping in protest for a treat. Treats were spaced out a lot more, more praise was added, walking pace was changed pretty often, and small sniff games in the grass was added as well. The sniff games was to entice him to engage in his environment more than just me. He has progressed very quickly since the first time I walked him which was about 4 walks ago within 2 weeks. He already had a good loose leash Foundation with his guardians. He just would stop frequently in hopes to get a treat instead of just auto check ins. He would eat grass aggressively as well. Now he can walk about 8 or so houses before I give a treat and he is perfectly fine and happy to continue the walk. He's such a smart boy and just wants to work. 🐾 #forcefreetraining #rewardbasedtraining #dogwalker #dogwalkerlife #dogtrainer #southbendindiana #southbend #indiana #pitbullsofinstagram #staffordshirebullterrier #staffiesofinstagram #pitbull (at South Bend, Indiana) https://www.instagram.com/p/CRbm0BslsEh/?utm_medium=tumblr
Back in August/September of 2020, I attended Shelter Playgroup Alliance workshop on shelter enrichment, play as enrichment, canine body language (play or non-play), and how to manage play. The first workshop of this year is happening today (or tomorrow, depending where you are). . Workshop 1: Saturday, January 9, 2021 ▶ 1PM-6PM PST Sunday, January 10, 2021 ▶ 4AM-9AM WIB . Workshop 2: Saturday, January 10, 2021 ▶ 1PM-6PM PST Sunday, January 11, 2021 ▶ 4AM-9AM WIB . Check out @shelterplaygroupalliance Facebook for full details and the link to join. This event is free. Get your notebook and brain ready! . What I learned from the last workshop series: 🔹Recommend this series not only for playgroups in shelter settings, but also for understanding of canine body language and canine interactions to ensure safety, positive experience, and fun enrichment. 🔹Not all dogs are good candidates for playgroup. 🔹Playgroup is not recommended as a behavior assessment, but as part of enrichment. 🔹Just like when we ask ourselves when making enrichment (is it enriching or teasing?), we should ask ourselves a similar thing when it comes to play. Is it enjoyable or frustrating overall? How do you think the consequences of this interaction will shape each dog's behavior in future interactions? 🔹PLAY should be enjoyable for both, or all for more than 2 dogs, parties involved. If only some dogs enjoy it and others don't, it's not a fair or safe interaction. 🔹Often, to the untrained eyes, stressful interactions can be seen (or dismissed) as play. That's why we keep learning! 🔹Supervision 👀👓 🌠🌠If you take your dogs to dog parks, the interdog play section is very valuable.🌠🌠 . . #shelterdogs #animalshelter #dogbodylanguage #shelterenrichment #rewardbasedtraining #dogtraining #humanedogtraining #positivereinforcement #shelterplaygroupalliance #LIMAplay https://www.instagram.com/p/CJ0dRNeh-T3/?igshid=ohz53ztrilf5
