T-E-R-R-I-B-L-E
I decided after my second SGA watch through to watch SG-1 and do this whole chronological order thing.
Over the weekend, I got to the divergence between the two shows and was able to start SGA over again. Guys, I'm going home!
I've really grown to love SG-1, but Atlantis will always be my Gater home. I didn't think I would have that many thoughts, because I thought all the thoughts last time through. (Y'all have got to be tired of my meta by now.)
I was wrong.
First off, it was supremely rewarding to watch this in chronological order, to go from SG-1 to SGA. It's like I've read the other half of the story, heard the other side of the conversation. I know Daniel and Jack at this point of their life and what they've been through. I know Elizabeth. I know that she's the anti-military who stood up for the military to the vice-president. I know she's earned their trust.
John "I like Antarctica" Sheppard. Of course he does. Also I love that he goes into the Stargate program basically blind, but he goes. It really shows he has nothing on earth and no one.
Highlights include:
Weir says: We need him. Everyone else with the Ancient gene can train to get better. John Sheppard does it naturally. I love that she picked Sheppard. She saw his potential.
When he walks into Atlantis, I always think: The city that lights up for Sheppard just the way Elizabeth left it for him.
When Teyla says Summner looks right through her and Sheppard asks if he does, and she says no.🥰
Okay, so when Sheppard picked up Teyla's necklace, did he activate it? Because 3 drones show up right away.
They all feel so light, buoyant. Even when you know Sheppard is here because he has no home, he's worlds away from the man he is in Doppelganger. And the same with Rodney. Rodney isn't really even stressed yet. He's kinda calm. Even when he knows they're running out of power he's not freaking out, not really freaking out. (So, does that mean the better you know Rodney, the more he's willing to whine at you?)
Also, the cinematography stood out to me because it's often framing Sheppard and Rodney in the same shot, like a hint at their friendship, or is panning between Elizabeth, Rodney, and Sheppard, hinting that they're the crew, the team, the family.
Also, Peter. Sigh.
Coup d'etat (S2:E17)
Weir: Good thinking.
Sheppard: Could have been in Mensa.
Lol. I love that this is Sheppard's canned response.
McKay says it's refreshing because Cowen didn't try to kill them. Sheppard should have smelled a trap. (This reminds me of Serenity when Mal knows is a trap because Inara doesn't fight with him.)
The Genii change hands and become better friends.
A solid, move-the-story-forward episode with some iconic lines snd moments.
I'm glad Lorne isn't dead. 😊
The Tower (S2:E15)
One of the things I really love about this show is the subtle signs of friendship. I love the moment when Ronon and Sheppard move as one when they're being threatened, but also how you see Ronon both watching the other soldiers and watching Sheppard so he can follow Sheppard's lead. I love it when Ronon takes the box of medical supplies from Carson. It's such a small thing. I love how during the prayer, Ronon holds Teyla's hand, but Rodney has to hold his fist. Such a brother thing to do.
This episode is just one that makes me smile, because Sheppard turned down the throne, turned down the girl, helped free the people from oppression, and came home.
Critical Mass (S2:E13)
I love this episode. After all the abandonment issues of the last one, this is a great team episode. I love how they lay out the breadcrumbs, the red herrings so that you think it's Cadman or Kavanagh, but once you know, you can see it's Caldwell.
I love Teyla's song and how they weave that into a lament for Atlantis, and then it crescendos into Atlantis surviving again.
I love Caldwell saying Sheppard's name, basically pleading for help.
This is a great episode to watch chronologically. I get it more now that I've watched it where it fits in SG-1.
Also, if you're a Colonel and you come to Atlantis, at some point, Sheppard will be obligated to save you. Just saying. Must be something in the air.
Also, this face makes an appearance. 🤣
Aurora (S2:E9)
To the crew of the Aurora.
I love this episode so much. It has what we all love about this show: the snark, the heart, the friendship. It's annoying Caldwell, saving each other, stopping the Wraith on more time. It's self-sacrifice, courage, holding out hope until the very last second.
I love Sheppard saying he doesn't trust McKay and then the rapid-fire back and forth of saving each other. I love Sheppard finally earning the trust of Aurora's Captain. I love the toast at the end. I love the honoring paid by one set of warriors to another 10,000 years later.
The Long Goodbye (S2: E16)
Can we just talk about how Sheppard doesn't deny he's a hopeless romantic?
When he disarms before playing the host to another entity, Sheppard gives his gun to Rodney, who proceeds to shoot at him. If the roles had been reversed, Sheppard would have shot Rodney yet again. In Rodney's defense, he did wing him slightly.
Also, I love that Caldwell is back, and he's the one most concerned about ANOTHER ENTITY IN THEIR HEADS!
Lorne!!! (I feel obligated to yell that every time he's on screen.)
I love that Ronon got tricked by his loyalty to Sheppard. I love that big sister Teyla both caught Sheppard and also couldn't kill him and also gave him a stunner.
The end scene with Caldwell teasing Sheppard and Weir about the kiss was gold.
