My thought process with this track was based on the lyrics.
“i’ll find the faith in anything” / “if the world ends tonight, you’ll be in my arms” / “frozen in time” / “I love this feeling, so rewind repeat it”
“just close your eyes, and all you need to see, is your heart and mine underneath the sheets”
On the surface there’s a theme running through the song about stripping things back the love between two people is the focus. But looking into things a bit further, there’s also hints towards a bit of loneliness or the two people not actually being together.
The part about closing your eyes and imagining something that isn’t physically there, and the idea of something being ‘frozen in time’ made me think of a recording. Obviously then with the track being called Rewind Repeat It my thoughts shifted to a cassette tape.
“and if darkness creeps in, rewind repeat it”
This line definitely connected to my ideas. It’s as though it’s saying, if you’re feeling down, rewind a recording and be reminded of the love.
The cassette idea was tweaked a fair bit, and the handwritten font is something i went back and forth on for a while as introducing a new style of type to the artwork could have made things look a bit disjointed. In the end, i kept it in as it felt more personal, which better conveyed the themes of the song.
Here is where I started to put in little details that some might completely skip over. The screws on the cassette are arranged to have Garrix’s + and x. These little tweaks are things that i’m a complete sucker for in artwork. Even if most people don’t notice them, its a subtle touch that themes and refines the design a bit more.
A second approach was the simple rewind and repeat symbols you’d find on media players. When making this I’d started to think and plan a lyric booklet full of double page spreads for each song, and I wanted to start building up supporting visuals that would fill these pages. This idea is really simple and blunt but i’d got an idea involving some type which i’ll blog about in a bit.
