I recently watched the entire HG Saga & also watched HP and I kept asking myself...how did it Happen that we had characters like Katniss & Hermione as well as Danearys in GO/T & Ended up with R*y?! All three are good examples for well developed characters (tho katniss more im the books than film) so they had Characters to be inspired by! I don't get they didn't manage to make her Fleshed out then.
My own theory is that its precisely because these heroines and many more before existed is why characters like Rey exist ( remember, Dany and Katniss and Hermoine are written YEARS before we ever saw them on TV, they all have origin in well fleshed out books) . The first factor is that Rey is not written at all well like a fleshed out character , she is a construct of multiple men and women who never agreed on what they truly want from her beside ONE thing.
The ONE thing is where things went wrong because that thing was basically "to embody the idea of Luke/Anakin but better and woker" since these people see that female lead franchises were making tons of money ( Hermoine was not the lead of her franchise but she was close second) and they wanted in on that trend too. This is why KK was so big on force is female promotion and then dropped it like a hot potato when all things were said on done. They all didn't care beyond how effectively she could act as a talking and screaming easter egg to Anakin and Luke, while also being the vehicle they can use to effectively get rid of the "family" in the family soap opera fairytale element. If every mainline film is bound by :family: they probably thought they won't be able to churn out SW movies as fast as Marvel does .
So they decided to scheme/write their way out of it and Ironically and JUSTLY shot themselves in the foot. Now they don't have their franchise , nor the goodwill.
Its all very corporate minded and hardly takes into account non corporate necessities like story ideas and :fleshing out: etc but then most of these decisions are made by MBA-in suits type not director or scriptwriter ( they just do what they say or like JJ he does exactly what they want because he is essentially one of them)
Another theory is that within the whole industry aka Monopoly Disney and the scraggly rest, the major change was Blackrock corp acquisition of Disney's 12% shares and other such significant share number in other media in America like Comcast, Fox Channel etc. These are enough shares that these companies including Disney now have to pass whatever policies they want to pass THROUGH them first. ..
This is why we are seeing a sudden spike in so much ":woke" or whatever you want to call it writing in Hollywood aka Disney because they want that sweet, sweet investment. Since most of these companies want investment and they don't TRULY care, and they are doing these movies in such an insanely large amount, the possibility of producing absolute horrible duds like Rey shoots up sky high!
Its a well known fact that if you mass produce something, the quality suffers. Its the same principle.
Ofc his statements sound so ironic because JUST LIKE Disney, they also have quite a well invested interest in China and keeping its draconian government in place for more money( in fact that company is said to be investing in their face recognition softwares and surveillance technology that everyone has been hearing rumblings about ...ITS THEM. They are doing that!)
This all could also easily explain why Rey is written the way she is- her female being such an emphasis when there was no need for it and how she lacks any forethought beyond how many politically correct scores she can tick for them. She is not written as compelling heroine, compelling lover, compelling action hero. Nothing at all substantive about her. Why would a company would fight tooth and nail against its own core audience to defend a character they hate when they were happy to destroy an Asian female actress just because they fatshamed her? money. Not ours but Blackrock's.
