In the In Between: Chapter 17

Domestic bliss. So close she can nearly taste it.

So why does the idea feel so painful?

It’s not until they’re brushing their teeth side by side at the sink that she begins to understand the source of the anxiety rolling under her skin. It feels too good. Too much like what her heart has been crying for since she’d been left with nothing but her backpack and that stupid note. And now that it’s here, and so close the tips of her fingertips can desperately brush against it, the loss of it would be unthinkable.

I don’t know if the “stranded together” trope is outdated so much as a narrative device a lot of authors used to get them talking without killing each other, like rian said, a way to get them in the same space and consistently interacting and developing together. tlj sort of did that development already with the force bond so stranded together fics are scarcer, the device isn’t that necessary. I love the trope too and I hope it makes a resurgence eventually!

Good point. I guess the stranded together trope would need to be revised a bit now that Rey and Kylo no longer want to kill each other---it can still be used though. It’s such a powerful combination of UST + character development + potential hurt/comfort scenarios + adventure + worldbuilding. (no wonder my favourite reylo fic is still A collision of stars, lol)

I also completely get why lots of writers have turned to aus. TLJ was much easier to predict, while we’re completely in the dark for IX, and a lot of the things we expected/wanted to see have already happened. IX is uncharted territory even for fic tropes, I guess.

Rey glides her hands to the requested piece of her, letting her fingers trail delicately over the flesh.

“Soft. Warm.”

Ben purrs. “That’s right, baby. Your skin is so soft for me. So sweet and fragrant. I could live on the scent of you alone.”

Rey makes a strange sort of high-pitched sound that makes Ben chuckle.

“That pretty little lace is hiding one of my favorite things,” he croons.
