“Hey!” Rey grinned as she ducked under the the wing of the furthest ship in the hangar, feeling victorious at having finally found who she was looking for. “What’re you working on, Rose?”
Rey couldn’t help but smile at how Rose waved at her from where she was underneath the hull without turning away from the task at hand. Rose’s jumpsuit was more stained than usual, and she’d kicked her boots off— something that only happened when she’d been at work on one problem for hours and was getting frustrated.
Rey crouched down between Rose’s spread legs that stuck out from under the side of the ship and rocked back onto her heels to stabilize herself. It was always interesting to watch Rose at work: Rey ended up learning something every time from the dedicated engineer.
But right now, it was time to get Rose to take a break. Finn hadn’t seen her at lunch, and she’d just missed dinner in the mess hall with their group of friends. Rey had come looking for her afterwards.
“Rose, c’mon.” Rey tapped her right shin in an offbeat rhythm. “I saved some of the dinner rations for you— even managed to sneak an extra chocolate bar.”
“Oh!” A clang rang out as Rose hit her wrench against something metal. “Pull me out?”
Rey laughed at her newfound excitement but complied and grasped Rose’s ankles, pulling her out in one smooth motion. Rose’s hair was tucked behind an orange bandana, there was streak of grease across the bridge of her nose, and a bright smile on her face.
Rey’s responding smile was more flustered than she aimed for it to be. “Hello.”
Rose’s smile widened as she raised her hands towards Rey. “Help me up?”
“Uh, right! Here you are,” Rey said, trying not to focus on the way Rose’s fingers fit snuggly into her palm. “I brought it all back to my quarters, if you don’t mind…”
“Lead the way!” Rose cheerfully exclaimed. She bounced on her feet to turn and follow Rey, but neglected to notice her discarded boots on the floor. The small engineer shrieked as she tripped and fell into Rey’s turned back, her arms instinctively wrapping around the Force-user’s waist. Rey’s eyes widened and her breath caught in her throat as she felt the press of Rose’s lips through the thin fabric criss-crossing over her back.
“Oh stars, I’m so sorry!” Rose rushed to apologize as she jumped backwards immediately, nearly tripping over her boots again. “Really, I didn’t mean to— well, at least not yet— and not without your consent!— and… yikes, just forget all of that? Please?”
Rey shook her head, planning on doing the exact opposite and committing it to memory. “Next time you accidentally kiss me, aim for my mouth?” She asked, trying not to sound too hopeful at the prospect.
From the rapid nod Rose gave her in response, Rey would have some less “accidental” kisses to look forward to in the near future.
