Bengali cuisine is one of those handful cuisines of the world which offers a plethora of options for plant-based as well as meat dishes. The geographical location, agricultural practices, societal norms, influx of cultures, were some of the reasons which contributed the rich glory of the eastern regional cuisine of India. While I share this minimalist Mughlai recipe of Chicken Rezala, I would like to highlight some of the glory points of this wonderful cuisine.

Rezala flies as far as the spell will let her, around the edges of her valley and then up, up, up until her wings are straining against cold air and the sky itself forbids her further passage.

She wishes to be free, to glide and find a lake to dive into, to hollow out caves for the hoard that she misses adding to.

At least she still has hunting, that eternal task. A Dragon is never satisfied, either with property or hunger. She chases deer and the larger birds that dare soar over her valley, taunting her with their own easy passage.

When the human takes over, she can only sit at first. Being a Dragon uses so much effort. Rezala can barely get herself to walk around and survey her keep, test the barrier that still pens her in, much less run about like she would’ve back home.

So she sets a kettle on, using the durable charms her family gifted to her in place of an actual flame, and does her walk-around while it boils. By the time she returns to her tower room it is whistling, and she can make herself tea. Not as strong as she would like, nor as sweet, for her luxuries are ever-dwindling. But enough to remind herself of what she will have again, someday.

Cup in hand, body worn but mind never slowing, Rezala sits with the small harp she could never part with, and plays an almost-forgotten melody. Her fingers are slow at first, and the more she tries the more of the tune she loses, but she doesn’t mind coming up with a new song, either.

As she plays, she plans. There is never a lack of time here, so she will study her magic tomes, and ask the small lizards that share her home to bring her herbs to examine, and of course she mustn’t forget to pen more letters to send with the next visiting caravan, or to practice her act for the next hero that attempts to rescue her.
