( au verse ) “I think I’m in love with you and I’m terrified.”
RG Prompts 1
[ Present Day Surya, In AU Verse ]
At first she thinks that maybe the words he speaks are a part of a cruel dream. How can this be reality when she knows for so long now that his heart belongs to someone else and her love, for just as long, had been unrequited? Had she been obvious in her actions around him and thus has lead him to find out about her feelings himself?
She doesn’t look at him. Her eyes remain focused on the blackness of the night outside her window even when he closes the distance between them to stand behind or, not even when he reaches for her hand to encase it in his own and not even when lets go of her hand to pull her into a back hug. There is no way that this can be real, she tells herself even her heart tells her that it is.
There are so many reasons that she thinks of in that long moment where she does not answer. She thinks of his father and how she is sure that he would never approve of her; of course, who would want a daughter with a history like her own? The unworthiness that settles in is like a stab wound to the chest but one that she cannot blame on him and so she lets it go.
She then thinks of them in the past; of how everything seemed perfect then and how much she believed every word that left his lips. She thinks too of how they were destined for forever then though their relationship was not one that blossomed out of love. In the silence and with the way he is holding her, it is so easy to recall how content they both were with just being with each other.
But, of course, things never went her way that is why when she realized that she might have been in love with him-- loved every single thing about him even the heart of his that was already occupied by someone else -- it was already far too late.
“Why are you telling me this?” she asks when she finally gathers enough courage. She knows that he would be able to read all that was left unspoken; why now? why only now? and she knows too that he would find her answer soon enough. Their love story had already ended, for it was a tragedy to begin with, so what was the use of reliving it?
His arms loosen around her and she realizes that she misses the warmth before she is able to comprehend that the footsteps echoing in her bedroom are of him walking way. She turns around and watches him but the pain that tugs at her heart is too much to ignore. With each step he takes, she finds answers as to why, if they both try hard enough, they could find their happy ending too.
“No, wait!” She calls out, voice filled with all her worries but she’d be damned if she did not give them the second chance they deserve. The distance between them vanishes in five long strides until she is running and throwing herself in his arms.
The words make her cringe and the disappointment in his voice makes her want to just hide underneath her blanket in shame. Guilt washes over her entire body; she feels so sorry that she cannot even bring herself to face him but she knows she has to lest she wants him to feel more upset than he already was.
“I’m sorry.” The words are nothing but sincerity and truth as they leave her still pale lips; even to her own ears, the apology sounded inadequate but she knows that she needs to start somewhere. The situation is again a testament that success and goodness are two things that are simply not meant to be stay in her life. What started out as a plan to surprise him with her visit to the army camp he was stationed at takes a turn for the incredible worst when she gets caught in the middle of an unexpected attack by the Elvan army.
Thankfully, the injuries she sustained are not as near-fatal as everyone expected it to be but they were still enough to have knock her unconscious upon impact and leave her with a demand to be bedridden for two weeks with complete rest. Today is the fourth day of her complete bed rest and also the day he finally visits her.
All the reasons that come into her mind all seem like pathetic excuses for her actions and she knows that those are not what he wants to hear nor is it the apology that is on her lips. But where is she to start? Is she to tell him that she missed him that is why she had decided to go to the war borders? The truth of her actions, that she had missed, weighs heavily on her tongue and sinks in the guilt that she feels. More than ever, it seems so childish and stupid of her to have even thought of it in the first place.
“I almost lost you.” he repeats and it succeeds in releasing the dam of her emotions.
Her fingers curl around her blanket and she turns her head away again so that he would not see the betraying tears welling up in her eyes. This time she speaks no words because Hyun ki, she knows, would understand all that she wants to say even when silence is all that she can offer him.
She lets the space between them fill up with all the apologies and all her unspoken fears for him.
I thought I was going to lose you. Is that what you do out there? Can’t you just stay here with me? Do you really have to follow father’s order? What if something happens to you in battle? What if...
A pause. Then she feels her bed dip under his weight as he pulls her carefully into his arms, mindful of her injuries. His arms are comfort personified and it brings her great relief to know that he is safe and sound. So, she presses herself closer and wraps her arm around him in an unspoken promise to quell his fears.
You aren’t going to lose me, Hyunki. It would take something greater and more powerful than this to make me part from you.
(Little did she know that her words would take into fruition in the form of his father a mere two months later when he announces that he was breaking off their engagement.)
blatant amusement easily spills over fair features, easily masking the considerable amount of annoyance that swelled up at the measly thoug ht.
( or perhaps, it is just the tone that turns her off from the idea. )
nevertheless, the princess languidly lifts a lithe arm, sliding slender digits over a defined jaw before she grasps it–grip firm as she jerks his gaze down to greet mischievous tawny hues, gold dipped nails pressing into soft skin gently ( warningly )–as cherry red lips curve, a smile that elicits a shiver from any devil.
“you do realize that, my dear general,” seulgi starts, tone darlingly dancing along the lines of coy as the pad of her thumb drags over his lower lip, eyes careful to drink in the richness of the scenario unraveling before her. “being my little sister’s former fiance and a major general does not put you at the same calibre as i.”
like ice, the patronizing edge in her voice is easy to pick up, even if her face only grows prettier, grip only firmer.
the first princess of surya was like fire, after all — tantalizing and patronizing all in one finely wrapped package as she steps forward, relishing in the warmth of air she can feel fanning over her lips.
between shared breaths of air, there is little hesitation, little movement from the taller of the two with her grip on his jaw even as she boldly closens their dwindling distance – a clear display of a girl who fantasized about the concept of control and the woman who’ve grown to master the art of wielding her body to achieve it.
admittedly, the princess of surya was not blind to the inner turmoil that has seized the kingdom and its officials -- to the rage that obscured her father from his common sense. seulgi wasn’t stupid, nor was she easily blinded by the ego of a dragonborn -- sooner or later her father will push and push and, well, the citizens of surya would push back.
and she wasn’t about to have that.
not that seulgi at this time could possibly imagine begin pacifying her father -- save his eldest, the emperor made explicit orders to not let any of his other children into his chambers or study for reasons seulgi did not know why herself.
only that it bugged her.
immensely.
so, spurned from entrance into her father’s study, the princess is quick to stalk her way through the courtyards, sending her handmaiden back to her quarters as the fiery woman slips further away into the dark of the night, walking aimlessly throughout grounds that she had explored every nook and cranny of since young.
anyone could see that she wasn’t pleased and everyone should know better than to engage. now, she wasn’t necessarily cruel like her younger brother, but when it came to her temper, the princess is almost worse in that setting. majority of the palace’s servants around long enough had witnessed a glimpse of that—her handmaidens included—and knew better.
but she supposes things are different major generals. especially with the way one finds himself almost purposely obscuring her way of path, prompting a small ( admittedly unladylike ) growl from the princess.
(*) The peace and quiet that greeted Hikari upon entering her guest bedroom in the Duuri palace was a welcomed one. The sound of the door clicking shut was reprieve from the horrors that laid beyond the threshold but even in the candlelight could not hide the unmistakable red marks that lined her wrists and arms.
She released a breath that she did not know she was holding in hopes of trying to calm herself. Her heart was pounding almost painfully in her chest as she made her way over to her dresser to look for the antiseptic and bandages to treat her wounds with. Perfume bottles and ornaments were knocked down as shaking hands continued its search for relief; pretty soon the emotions she had been trying to contain since she had encountered him would unleash itself like water from an overflowing dam.
How could she have ever forgotten how viscous her brother could be? Aeron had a very unique way of showering Hikari in affection. He liked to leave marks that would make her unable to forget how much he missed her and that he loved her dearly. Such was the sick twisted sibling dynamic between them; it was one that left her with nightmares for nights on end.
Before she knew it, broken sobs wrecked her lithe body but it was neither from the sting of the antiseptic on her wounds or from the lingering pain that washed over her entire body. It was much more than that. She wanted to make it go away but she could not escape it even when she closed her eyes.
Her sobs that echoed in the empty room were proof of it.
