She had told him, in a voice as flat and cold as smooth ice, that his name would never be spoken in the palace again, that only his long service kept her from sending him to the headsman for treason.
There are so many little clues sprinkled around that Morgase is resisting Rhavin's Compulsion. Bryne doesn't realize that it is her profound love for him that saved him from the headsman. It's heartbreaking.
So like- In the Dragon Reborn, when Mat meets Morgause after breaking into the palace, did Rhavin know who he was? Like, did Rhavin recognize him as one of the three Ta’veren they’re hunting or does he not know. If he did know, then why let Mat go, he had the opportunity to either capture or kill Mat dropped directly into his lap. So that leaves a few potential possibilities,
One: he didn’t know who Mat was and believed Mat’s cover story, and his comments were just general taking amusement in knowing that the world is going to end and this stupid little farm boy wants to go back home to his stupid little farm
Two: he didn’t know who Mat was but could tell Mat was lying about who he was and guessed that Mat knew something he shouldn’t but decided that he wasn’t any threat and was simply making it clear that he knew Mat was lying in his usual mocking way
Three: he DID know who Mat was but decided Mat wasn’t enough of threat to risk over playing his hand and potentially revealing himself and instead just decided to be vaguely threatening in hopes of scaring Mat off
The chapters with Morgase under Rhavins compulsion are so hard to read. Knowing she’s being raped, degraded, and abused by him every day, and that he’s successfully isolated her from anyone who could help her, is way too true to how real life predators operate for comfort
The Wheel of Time fancast:
Idris Elba as Rhavin
Morgase's inner dialogue while fighting Rhavin's Compulsion is heartbreaking.
She remembers her love for Gareth Bryne, but as soon as she remembers, it is suppressed by the opinions Rhavin forced on her. It is so painfully tragic.
Morgase dead because he had done nothing. His own hand had been on the knife as surely as Rahvin’s.
I don't think that culpability works that way, Rand.
