Reviewing Rhetorical Fallacies; Appeal to Consequences of a Belief
Everyone (myself included) would benefit from a review of Rhetoric and their Fallacies; especially during these times
;) These are tools we all need to be using when evaluating public figures, our personal relationships, our jobs; pretty much anywhere we communicate!Soooo let me build the basis of understanding by starting with this picture; The Truth is a constant and doesn’t change regardless of the how it is used. So picture the truth as a solid shape and these analysis tools are the lenses and lighting techniques to show different aspects of the truth; but never change its actual composition or shape. So many people and institutions use these appeals to construct your basis of thinking. We are after all a species that thrives on compound knowledge. BUT when you build your structure and knowledge with skewed versions of the truth; and linking your personal experiences to reinforce the strength of that belief or conclusion you’ve come to.
it can be a dangerous and unstable place for you and the people around you (literately and figuratively lol)In order to understand and be free of others constructing your mind for you; It is prudent to have a full comprehensive view of the truth, or at least the ability to know how these lenses affect it. Therefor building a picture of the truth and what it would look like without the lenses; even if we have or will never see the truth for what it really is.
Then we take our micro understanding and share it with the macro in order to put it through the scientific method and confirm or deny this truth. Easier said then done though, shit can get pretty hairy lol
Allright that’s my goal with this so without further ado lets start with the Appeal to Emotion category.
6/16 Appeal to Consequences of a Belief
Arguing a belief is false because it implies something, you’d rather not believe
Example; “That can’t be the senator on that sextape. If it were, he’d be lying about not knowing her. And he’s not the kind of man who would lie.”
Now while this line of thinking is a construct of our logic and in conjunction with several other forms of logic can support a case; but if they use this solely as a way to convince you of something, id say it’s a red flag.I want to watch for examples of this in my daily threads
