Rhomaleosaurus cramptoni

A large plesiosaur from the early Jurassic. Alongside the ichthyosaur Temnodontosaurus, both acted as apex predators hunting ammonites, ichthyosaurs, and other plesiosaurs. Like sharks, Rhomaleosaurus used sensory organs in its skull to pick up chemical trails giving it a tremendous sense of smell.

Jurassic June 2024 Day 9: Rhomaleosaurus cramptoni

Rhomaleosaurus cramptoni was a plesiosaur from the Early Jurassic of England. While some of the most famous plesiosaurs were the long-necked forms like Elasmosaurus, Rhomaleosaurus was one of the first large pliosaurs, a group with stouter bodies and skulls, shorter necks and famous genera such as Liopleurodon and Kronosaurus.
