Here's my submission for @radiohead's #RHVignette contest. #daydreaming #tiltshift #short #radiohead #hoboken #nyc (at Hoboken, New Jersey)
This was my entry for Radiohead’s vignette competition. While I didn’t win, I was delighted to learn that it was shortlisted and viewed by the band. If you’re interested, you can watch an HD version here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsjAfCF2kdg
Therianthropy _ a vignette feat. Radiohead’s Daydreaming
On July 15th, my favorite band Radiohead announced a vignette competition for their song ‘Daydreaming’. It felt like the universe was calling me to pay back my dues to a band that has given me a lot over the years.
The rules were simple allowing us freedom:
Entrants need to create a video vignette with a square aspect ratio - 1:1. The audio soundtrack to the vignettes will be provided by the band. A 0:56 seconds alt. strings version of ‘Daydreaming’ from their latest masterpiece “A Moon Shaped Pool”. Finally, our submission had to be uploaded to our own Instagram, Twitter or Facebook account captioned using the hashtag #rhvignette by the competition deadline July 30, 2016 at 23:59:59 p.m. BST.
The deadline was 2 weeks and our goal was to bring my childhood fascination with Werewolves to life:
Therianthropy is the mythological ability of human beings to metamorphose into other animals by means of shapeshifting. The term “therianthropy” comes from the Greek theríon, meaning “wild animal” or “beast” (implicitly mammalian); and anthrōpos, meaning “human being”. It was used to refer to animal transformation folklore of Europe as early as 1901.[1] Therianthropy was used to describe spiritual beliefs in animal transformation in a 1915 Japanese publication, “A History of the Japanese People from the Earliest Times to the End of the Meiji Era.”[2] One source, “The Human Predator,” raises the possibility the term may have been used as early as the 16th century in criminal trials of suspected werewolves.[3]
It seemed we had all the right ingredients to pull that off so we went to work. Our opening shot was a bare foot getaway scene that had to be switched last minute. The smooth cement surface turned into gravel because we were beaten to location by a Tai Chi, early bird special, class taking place where we had intended to film.
Multiple takes had to be done to catch the ideal light and with exhaustion looming and the gravel taking its toll my lead lady tripped on a rock. We knew immediately that this was more than just a bad sprain. She was unable to put any weight on her foot. We wrapped up our filming and went straight to the ER. The doctor’s x-ray revealed that she had fractured 2 toes. They recommended wearing a medical boot and wrapping it tight for 6 weeks. Needless to say we put our little production on hold. Over the next couple of days watching some of the footage we both felt like we had to finish what we started. With slight improvement in Meri’s mobility we rewrote the scenes to avoid filming her feet and 2 days before the deadline we gave it a final try. The product of our efforts can be viewed above.
