A couple weeks back, I got reminded of old art I did back in 2010 for rapper Rhymefest. So, in my quest to actually draw more this year, I wanted to test and see how much my style had changed since then.
Selma was released in a limited number of theaters on 25 December 2014, before wider release in January 2015.
Paul Webb had sold his screenplay in 2008 and the following year Lee Daniels was in talks to direct, but chose to work on The Butler instead. Ava DuVernay was brought onto the production in 2013 and began reworking the script with Webb (DuVernay estimates that they rewrote 90% of the original), with some of the Martin Luther King's speeches needed to be rewritten due to licensing issues (Steven Spielberg had secured rights for a separate project).
Despite a number of historical inaccuracies within the film, Selma was a commercial and critical success, and was nominated for 2 Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
"Glory" by Common and John Legend (and co-written with Rhymefest) received the Oscar for Best Song.
Today in Hip Hop History:
Rhymefest was born July 6, 1977
