#tombstonetuesday An unmarked wooden headstone at the barren, but picturesque Bullfrog-Rhyolite Cemetery near the ghost town of Rhyolite, #Nevada. Only a handful of marked stones exist in this cemetery. Most are unmarked mounds, some with piles of rocks or wooden grave markers, or have simple iron fencing around them. This is Tom Kelly's bottle house in Rhyolite, #Nevada, a true ghost town, not far from Death Valley National Park. The town began in early 1905 as one of several mining camps that sprang up after prospectors Shorty Harris and Ed Cross discovered gold in the surrounding hills. By 1908, the town reached a height of 5,000 to 8,000 residents. However, by 1910, gold production dropped dramatically, along with financial panic in the east, which negatively impacted the mining industry. People began to leave Rhyolite. The post office closed in 1919 and by 1920, the population was estimated at 14. Today, the area is managed by the Bureau of Land Management and is open for viewing. Ruins of a school, commercial buildings, a train depot, and homes are scattered amongst the site. Tom Kelly's bottle house was built in 1906 and raffled off to a family. Its walls are built entirely of old glass bottles!
