i’ve gotta do a presentation on contemporary art in my art appreciation class and our professor gave us a list of artists to pick from. and from there we had to pick an artwork to talk about.
originally i’d picked santiago sierra, but in doing research about him i stumbled across marina abramović. while not on the list of artists, i found myself bewitched by her work. so i asked my professor if i could talk about her and she said “yes. 🙂”
with that context in mind, there’s a group of boys in my class who literally never shut the fuck up.
they just whisper to each other and giggle and annoy the shit out of my for the entire hour and fifteen minutes of class.
but this presentation is my chance for revenge. it’s going to be a two pronged attack.
firstly, when they fuck around by way of their juvenile ramblings, they’re going to find out by way of me embarrassing them in front of the entire class. it’s one thing to have an instructor reprimand you for your behavior, but having a fellow student say, “if your conversation is so important it needs to happen now, might i recommend having it outside in the hallway instead. and if it’s not that important, i recommend waiting until i’m finished to continue whispering your sweet nothings to each other. you’re acting like children and your immaturity is as embarrassing as it is rude.”
secondly, abramović is a performance artist whose work is widely regarded as “disgusting and disturbing” by a lot of people.
people like the boys in my class. the boys who i’m going to make incredibly uncomfortable the presentation down below (there is information i'll be including during the presentation that isn't included on the slides).
i’ll update you all once the deed is done.
marked by endurance, pain, identity, & exploration, abramović uses her own body to challenge the relationship between performer & artist in search of her physical & psychological boundaries–as such, please be warned some of the images feature blood, nudity, weapons, and/or visible distress.
