Album Review: Jimmy Page & the Black Crowes - Live at the Greek

Though the tour was aborted before things could really cohere, the 1999 collaboration between Jimmy Page and the Black Crowes did yield a live album important enough that it now merits a 25th-anniversary reissue.

Which means, of course, more time has passed since the 2000 release of Live at the Greek and today than had passed between Led Zeppelin’s 1980 disbandment and the ’99 Page/Crowes partnership.

Remixed and expanded to include previously unreleased Crowes originals and five Zeppelin songs and a “Jam” recorded during sound checks at the titular venue and Jones Beach, the three-disc set confirms the potency of this admixture and makes the case for leaving the Crowes’ songs to another release - as fine as those numbers are, they can’t compete with Zep numbers and such covers as Fleetwood Mac’s “Oh Well.”

Page is upfront and identifiable throughout, his leads benefitting from the support of Crowes guitarists Rich Robinson and Audley Freed. And singer Chris Robinson handles his unenviable duty enviably, singing in the style of Robert Plant but never forsaking his own identity. Only “Your Time is Gonna Come” and “In the Light” flummox the singing Robinson while the Yardbirds’ “Shapes of Things” leaves everyone a little off-balance.

Pity, too, drummer Steve Gorman, who does his best to fill Bonzo’s gaping absence with help from bassist Sven Pipien and keyboardist Eddie Harsch.

It retrospect, and with the expanded Live at the Greek as a reminder, this temporary partnership worked better than it should have. Still does.
