Tuesday, November 29: Sick Speed, “A Time and a Place”
Sick Speed was presumably intended as Rich Ward’s main band after Stuck Mojo broke up, with Fozzy a fun diversion. But the attention and novelty that came from teaming up with Chris Jericho gave Fozzy a surprising momentum that ultimately relegated The Way I Am to one-off status. Then again, the presence of three singers on one record didn’t indicate a clear sense of direction, though Ward’s writing was focused and “A Time and a Place” did have a clear throughline. Perhaps the bigger issue was that Sick Speed was more rooted in hard rock and there wasn’t much of a market for that sort of thing in 2002, whereas the meat and potatoes metal of the sort Fozzy played (or rather covered, since they weren’t recording a ton of originals at that point) was returning to prominence. But “A Time and a Place” was a well-written hard rocker with a hooky chorus, leaning on the catchier aspects of Ward’s writing and working as a head-bobber. It was a bit nondescript in spots, but was nonetheless enjoyable to listen to, even if most in the underground knew Ward was capable of more.
Fozzy - Judas
What have I become? Now that I've betrayed Everyone I've ever loved, I pushed them all away And I have been a slave to the Judas in my mind Is there something left for me to save in the wreckage of my life?
Well, my week is made. I'm.. flabbergasted.. to say the least. I'M SOO HAPPY. I gave this Michael to him when I met him & Fozzy in April. This is the first piece of Michael Myers memorabilia I had ever bought. It was such a special part of my collection. Rich is OBSESSED with Michael & Halloween. After having it for 10 years, I knew I needed to pass this onto him. It makes me so happy to see my old Michael getting used & finally receiving the love he has deserved all these years. Thank you so much for making my day, Rich!! It makes me so happy knowing that you love him. ❤😁
Your mama gave birth to a big assclown!
The many mentions of Chris Jericho, Fozzy and Rich Ward, there are more but I didn't screen shot them 🖤😍
Wednesday, July 5: Fozzy, “To Kill a Stranger”
“To Kill a Stranger” was the first sign that Chris Jericho and Rich Ward might actually be taking Fozzy seriously: the self-titled debut had a couple originals sprinkled in with all the covers, but Happenstance’s first proper track was a surprisingly convincing Jericho/Ward stomper that actually held its own next to the Priest and Sabbath remakes. The past and present Y2J wasn’t exactly on par with his vocal idols, but he had hunger and conviction, and Ward’s riffing offered a more traditionally metallic approach than his usual work with Stuck Mojo. The song was straightforward and urgent, not at all reinventing the wheel but ably making the case for Fozzy earning its place in the metal community, and considering the group’s origins as a wrestler’s hobby band, that was actually a significant achievement.
