Richard J Oliver is this months artist !
I did not believe it when he opened my pestering email, I could not believe it when he responded .... and I certainly couldn’t believe it when he said he would be only to happy to throw down some of his art for this month’s rather special release - Sail on Phaelon.
I have long been a fan of Richard’s ‘photorealsurreal-ism’ (yeah I think that is my word) but that’s how I interpret these ‘3D posing as 2D’ paintings. (I have never seen and I will never see a more detailed and loved mastery of creating ‘speculars’ .... I could stare at these for hours ..)
The world Rich paints is a garden of earthly delights, a world in which reality is being warped by anxious caricatures drafted in from an existential metempsychosis .... in a galaxy not that far far away. A galaxy in which frailty meets brutality, hope illuminates despair and childhood innocence goes heads to head with adulthood greed.
Oliver was born and raised in Wales, studied Fine Art at the University of the West of England and undertook his Masters at UWIC in Wales. In his time between studies, Oliver built his reputation which is now a feast for all to indulge on at a global scale. His work has been included in numerous European group and solo shows, including an exhibition at the prestigious Museum of Modern Art in Wales.
He now resides, earth-runs and paints in Los Angeles, California.
The painting used for this month’s art is entitled ‘The Lighthouse’
