When a fellow Lash Artist recently tagged me in an online competition she was judging I was hesitant. I’d made up my mind a few years ago that I’d completed that journey, learn’t a lot from the experiences and honoured myself for actually traveling to North America from Australia to compete in the worlds first International Eyelash Extension Competition.
Seizing the opportunity to learn and grow by stepping over immense fear in so many ways, being awarded for my efforts and most of all breaking down and getting present to personal barriers is something I hold very close to my heart, so the desire to revisit isn’t particularly strong.
But, something sparked my interest. I looked at the brief and a Client came to mind. Art History was the theme and I instantly thought about the current situation at Standing Rock in North Dakota. Although unsure at this point whether or not I wanted to enter, something called from deep within and a vision began to grow. My Client had mentioned she has Native American Indian ancestors. Unfortunately she has no recollection to the particular tribe but was more than happy to be a Model for this creative inspiration.
The face paint chosen was rather symbolic in itself and a total fluke at the time but as it turns out the day we completed the lashes was also the day of the US election. Red, blue and white are not from the traditional Native American Medicine Wheel, but the colours of the American and Australian flags, to name a few.
Information regarding colour symbolism for Native Americans was sourced here - https://www.warpaths2peacepipes.com/native-american-symbols/color-meanings-symbolism.htm - I acknowledge that these colours may not be indicative of traditional Native Indian colour symbology, patterns or designs and share with no disrespect for the sacredness between differing tribes or countries. US Flag colour symbology was sourced here - http://www.usflag.org/colors.html
As far as the flag is concerned; White signifies purity and innocence. Red, hardiness and valour and Blue, vigilance, perseverance and justice.
For Native American Indian war paint;
White symbolises mourning.
Red, war, blood, violence and energy and Blue is for confidence.
Finally, colour symbolism for Native American face paint are said to be as follows;
White for sharing, peace, purity and light. Red for faith, beauty and happiness and Blue for Wisdom and Intuition.
What I find intriguing are the three different meanings and how they are being clearly played out by different groups. The Government or Corporations being the flag, the typical Native American Warrior war paint and the face paint, the more feminine essence.
This feminine essence is what I would like to inspire my fellow Lash Artists with through this creative project, and anyone that feels drawn to it. Throughout the making I found myself getting caught up in the competition. The energy surrounding my vision quickly grew from being about creativity and passion to the angst of fitting into competition guidelines and fee’s when at the heart of it all, I just wanted to share a vision and a message.
Would that message be heard via this competition? Probably not. Nor do I feel I need to pay to share it. And that is not to say there is anything at all wrong with this type of competition, it’s just not why I chose to create it. Striving to be an intuitive, loving and sharing woman is why I choose to create.
We have been seeing a trend with the women of today, many of us have taken on a rather masculine way of being. We saw it in the election and we see it in our daily lives with the overly driven energy and need to achieve taking over our gentle, sharing, intuitive and faithful beauty. There is nothing wrong with achieving goals, but true strength is lost through force.
Let’s face it, it’s not just the women that are all out of balance. Our men have been told for far too long to suppress their emotions. A type of hardiness that crumbles in rage towards themselves through suicide or outward violence.
What does it mean to be Man and Woman? To be Feminine and or Masculine? Can we be both? What does it look and feel like to bring both of these aspects into balance? To know when to focus on our individual needs yet also feel into when we are being called to reconnect collectively. To connect our hearts and minds and balance our “doing” with “being”.
“The well-known new age epithet “You create your own reality” is actually only half true. You do not create the actual events in your life - but you do influence their playing out through your attitude. When you blame people in the world around you, you set up a victim frequency pattern that reinforces itself over and over in your life.
If, on the other hand, you are able to accept everything that happens to you regardless of whether you enjoy it or not, you set up a surrender frequency pattern that allows you to move through life with great fluidity and beauty, and your life reflects it” - Richard Rudd
Our beautiful warrior hearts are being called to look into our reflection. To look to one another and see the parts of ourselves that we are denying. To accept one another for where we are currently at, allow eachother to grow at our own pace and embrace the changes that are upon us.
