It's not great that so many kin spaces are focused on finding canonmates. Firstly it cuts people off from making friends with people who aren't people they knew before, which is toxic because the smaller your friendgroup is the easier it is for you to be manipulated by others/not catch behavioral red flags, and secondly it means that people like myself who have obscure kintypes end up with very few discord servers to join or people to talk to. When you prioritize talking to people you might've known, you end up not talking to whole chunks of the community - who for all you know might be good people who you could be good friends with - purely because they're not from a source you recognize. - Rick Brant, from the 1940's/1950's Rick Brant novels #Rick🌟

This is an appreciation post for people who have kintypes from extremely recent and popular media. You are not picking kintypes, you're not fake, you're not proof that ant1 fictionkin are right when they say "it's a choice, that's why people have types from popular sources". I have nothing but obscure kintypes and it is only by sheer luck that I was able to find my sources - the reason people don't have as many obscure sources is because they're obscure, not because there's anything wrong with you or how you experience being fictionkin. You are just as much 'kin as anyone else and I support you. - #Rick🌟

Guess who's recovered enough from having major surgery/internal bleeding/nearly dying in May to go to university this fall? THIS GUY! I'm so hyped to get back to classes and into subjects that give me all those good kinfeels and be around all that architecture that reminds me of my original era. I refuse to wait half an hour for someone else to get home to get this for me."

Me: "I'm pretty sure I was aroace in my canon." Scott: *exists* Me, breaking out into a sweat as I remember it was 1947 and this would not have ended well: "It's not gay to adore a guy and think of him as a fundamental part of your life and admire how good looking he is, right?"

Me, a language nerd who knows those were both Jewish German surnames but the latter sounded more English and was easier to get publishers to go with: "I see what you're doing here and I appreciate the stealth representation. Especially given it was the 40's and you had to argue about this. I see you, I love you, you were weirdly progressive for your era and I appreciate you."

Sorry to the mods for sending in two confessions in a row but I just need to vent:

I just spent 160 USD online on seven books in my canon so if you're wondering what it's like having a kintype from a book series that's been out of print longer than your parents in this life have been alive, imagine doing that and then looking at the final four books you know you'll never own because they're going for 100 USD or more each. Oh, and the series is so obscure that if you try looking up anything about it, you can't find plot summaries or pirate the books even if you wanted to. OH, and also I spent 47 USD on four books from my series at the used bookstore in my town yesterday in order to obtain everything as cheaply as possible. That's 207 USD total and my set isn't even complete. (If I ever find another kintype I hope it's from a single book and not a series, please, please don't let me do this twice.)

I've spent so much time and effort and money just to get to read these things that the next person who says obscure kin are hipsters or there's no way anyone could take 'kin seriously is going to get pelted with all these books packed into a bag. I wouldn't go through this much work to get ahold of these if it was "for fun" or "not real".

I sigh when people compliment my "dark academia" aesthetic because that's not what I'm going for. I was raised in the 30's and 40's, I'm just used to a certain level of formality. I miss being able to wear clothes I feel comfortable in. I'm still adjusting to the prevalence of jeans, which are, to me, sensory hell and also something I associate with goofing around with my sister in the field behind my house... I just made myself sad. I miss my sister. I don't know if I miss her stealing my cardigans or not, though. - Rick from the Rick Brant novels, #Rick🌟
