25. “I could really eat something.”
“Thank you again Rusty for picking us up from the airport.” Emily said with a smile, turning her head to look at her younger brother. “We’re so going to surprise Mom!” She added, clapping happily.
Rusty rolled his eyes at his sister’s overdone cheerfulness and replied, keeping his eyes on the road as he drove his siblings to the condo, “About that, Em’… I think it’s better if we give Mom a call, so we can tell her we’re coming home early…”
“Oh come on, baby bro, you’re no fun!” Ricky exclaimed from the back seat, as he leaned to pat his brother’s shoulder. “It’s not a surprise anymore if we call to tell her we’re about to arrive.”
“Listen, I don’t think it’s a good idea.” Rusty insisted with a sigh. “Isn’t it already a surprise if you tell her that you two are in town?”
“I’m going to pretend I didn’t hear that.” Emily replied before shaking her head, “What are you so afraid of, Rusty?” She asked curiously, glancing at her brother.
“I just want to avoid any uncomfortable situation.” Rusty cringed as his mind pictured what his mother and Andy could be up to. He shook his head in an attempt to chase those unpleasant thoughts away.
Ricky chuckled and covered his mouth with a hand when he saw Rusty glare at him in the rear-view mirror. “Mom and Andy are probably still at work.” He told his brother after he checked his watch, “Gosh, dude, you’re overdramatic.”
“I’m not, but fine, let’s do it your way.” Rusty shot back with a slightly irritated tone. He shook his head at his siblings before he complained, “You have no idea what it is like to live with those two.”
-----------
“I can’t believe we’re already home.” Sharon sighed happily as she poured hot water in her mug. She put a teabag in it and smiled when she felt Andy’s arms around her waist.
“That’s thanks to you, babe.” Andy whispered in her ear. “My soon-to-be-wife is the smartest woman in the world.” He nuzzled into her hair and dropped a kiss behind her ear. “You broke the case with your intuition.”
Sharon shivered delicately under his touch and hummed softly. Andy tightened his grip on her and started kissing her neck. A bright smile graced Sharon’s features as she asked him playfully, “Do you have something in mind, Lieutenant?”
“Maybe, Commander.” Andy teasingly replied as a hand slid under her blouse and gently rubbed the skin of her belly.
Sharon closed her eyes and leaned deeper against him. She perfectly knew what he was up to. “Care to share?” She whispered in a husky tone.
In a blink of an eye, Andy turned her in his arms and crashed his lips against hers. Sharon moaned in the kiss and deepened it, locking her arms around his neck. Andy pulled her closer to him, an arm around her waist while his other hand ran up and down the skin of her back. Sharon moaned again and fuzzily reached out, untucking his shirt from his pants and unbuttoning it. She then slid her hand underneath the fabric and grazed the skin of his chest.
Andy hissed under her soft touch and whispered hoarsely, his eyes darker than usual, “Babe, if you keep this up, we won’t make it to the bedroom.”
Sharon’s lips moved to his neck and she left a trail of kisses there. “Who says I want to go to the bedroom?” She replied teasingly, her lips brushing against his skin as she spoke.
“Rusty?” Andy wondered with a last bit of sanity. The last thing he wanted was for Rusty to walk on them. They would never live through it.
“He said he would be working late with Andrea.” Sharon replied, punctuating each word with a kiss. “Couch, Andy!” She then ordered him, gently tugging at his shirt.
“Yes, Ma’am.” Andy simply nodded before he caught her lips with his for another hungry kiss.
Sharon wrapped her arms once again around his neck, a hand pulling lightly at his hair. Andy slowly moved her backwards to the living room as they kept kissing. She realized they had reached the couch when she felt her legs meet an obstacle. Andy’s hands fidgeted with her blouse and he finally managed to open it. He gently laid her down on the couch. Sharon pulled him to her with a smirk as her hands moved to unbuckle his belt.
Andy broke the kiss and muttered against her lips, “My God, Sharon, I…”
They suddenly heard the sound of a key turning in the lock and they pulled apart, their eyes widening. Before they could even react, the door swung open. In a desperate attempt to get a grip on themselves, Andy rolled off the couch and fell on the floor with a pained groan. Sharon immediately sat on the couch, clenching her blouse to cover her chest, as her eyes met her children’s shocked faces.
“Emily, Ricky, what…?” Sharon fumbled, startled.
The room stayed silent for a few seconds, awkwardness filling the air. Emily then took a step forward, “Surprise, Mom!” She exclaimed with a theatrical hand gesture and an awkward smile.
Ricky rubbed his forehead with a hand while Rusty cringed at the scene in front of him. He couldn’t help but throw an I told you so look at his siblings. Ricky punched lightly his brother’s upper arm in response while Emily rolled her eyes.
Sharon turned to look worriedly at Andy who was sitting on the floor, resting his arm on the couch as he winced in pain. Her hand went to cup his face as she whispered softly to him, “Andy, are you okay?”
“Well, aside my ego, you mean? I’m fine.” Andy reassured her with a light smile. He then turned to Sharon’s children and told them, rubbing his neck uncomfortably, “Hey kiddos, welcome home. I hope you don’t mind if we don’t greet you properly, but…”
“Oh please, Andy. Don’t worry about it.” Emily replied in a half panicked, half amused tone. She waved a reassuring hand at her mother and Andy. The situation was already awkward enough; the welcome hugs could wait.
“Gross! I am so not sitting on that couch everagain.” Ricky let out in an overdramatic tone.
“Ricky!” Emily hissed, elbowing her brother. When her brother turned to look at her and shrugged, she threw him a deadly stare. Emily ran a hand through her hair and cleared her throat. “Uhm, I think… Uhm… I could really eat something.” She fumbled before turning to meet her younger brother’s gaze, “What about that burger place you told us about, Rusty?”
“Burger place?” Rusty repeated, as if he didn’t know the meaning of those two words. His mind was still blank as he tried to recover from the initial shock. He was starting to believe his mother and Andy were trying to scar him for life. If this was their intent, they were making a pretty good job at it.
“Geez, I can’t believe you are willing to eat that kind of food! What happened to the I must eat healthy, I’m a ballerina-Emily?” Ricky teased his sister. He covered his mouth with a hand when a chuckle escaped his lips.
“I do eat junk food, idiot.” Emily shot back to Ricky, slowly emphasizing each word. Even if her last statement wasn’t true, it wasn’t the time to admit it. They definitely needed an excuse to get out of this embarrassing situation. Emily then turned her attention to her mother and Andy and said, “Well, we’ll be back in a few with food… and we will reenact the welcome home scene.” She paused and pointed a finger at them before adding in a half serious, half joking tone, “Minus your awkward moment on the couch.”
Sharon and Andy exchanged a look and stayed silent. They watched Emily open the door and get out, followed by Rusty.
“We’ll be right back, Mom, Andy.” Ricky told them with a small smile before closing the front door behind him.
Sharon and Andy stared at the front door in silence for a few seconds. They then met each other’s gazes and a nervous laugh escaped Sharon’s lips. She covered her mouth with a hand and managed to mutter, “Oh my God.”
“Definitely.” Andy agreed with a chuckle. He shook his head at the ridiculous situation they got themselves in. He was too old for all this. “I might never be able to get up off the floor.” He informed Sharon with a groan.
“I’m sorry, honey, but you’ll have to. We don’t want the kids to be back and find us still here.” Sharon told him with a sweet smile as her hand ruffled his salt-and-pepper hair. She leaned in to drop a kiss on his forehead and met Andy’s loving brown eyes. Sharon traced an invisible path along his face, only stopping to briefly stroke his cheek before going on. Her hand then reached for his chin and she gently lifted it with her thumb. She leaned in and kissed him tenderly. She then stood from the couch and extended a hand to help Andy to his feet, “Come on, let’s freshen up before they come back home.”

12. “What if I don’t see it?”
Numb. If there was a word that could describe how she was feeling it was numb. The pain she was experiencing was so intense it numbed her. Since the phone call, Sharon had carried on doing tasks in autopilot. She had put down the phone and had walked back to her children with a plastered smile on her face. She had prepared dinner, had fed Ricky his soup while cutting Emily’s meat as she always used to. She had asked Emily about school and the child was thrilled to tell her about her day; how she had managed to write her name neatly, how her friend Veronica had spilled the apple juice all over the table during lunch or how Tommy caught a frog during recess only to free it later in the classroom, causing everyone to panic. Emily had tons of stories about her day and as much as Sharon had forced herself to react to each one of them – a smile, an exclamation, a laugh – it was getting harder to keep on with her act. She had then walked her children to bed, first three-years-old Ricky who had fallen asleep in her arms, and then six-years-old Emily which enthusiastically had told her mother more about her day before kissing Sharon goodnight.
As Sharon walked back to the empty living room, she felt the weight of what happened earlier in the evening. She sat on the couch and looked around her. She was alone at home, Jack nowhere to be seen. Her husband had been gone for a month and Sharon had no idea where he might be. After Ricky’s birth, he had started drifting away, going back to drinking and fooling around. Jack had promised her last year that he would have changed, that he was back to stay and Sharon had stupidly believed him. Here she was again, with an estranged husband and now twokids to raise alone.
Sharon stood from the couch and walked to the phone. She took the handset and dialed the number. She waited patiently for someone to answer. “Good evening, this is Jackson Raydor’s wife speaking.” Sharon said, “Is my husband still at work? I need to reach him for an important matter. Yes, thank you, I’ll wait.”
Sharon nervously fidgeted with the phone cord while she waited for the woman to come back on the line. Those few minutes of waiting felt like a lifetime to Sharon, especially when she already knew the answer she was going to get.
“No, it’s okay.” Sharon replied as soon as the woman informed her Jack wasn’t in his office. “He’s probably heading home. Thank you.” She said before hanging up.
He’s probably heading home.Sharon could fool people, but she couldn’t fool herself anymore. How many times more was she going to use that lie?She scoffed as she walked back to the couch and let herself fall on it unceremoniously. And so what?If he was at work, what would have she done? Ask him to come home, ask him for his support?Sharon laughed at her naivety. How could she believe that her “husband”, the one who dumped her after Ricky’s birth taking all her money with him, the one who spent time drinking in bars and cheated on her with countless women, was going to support her?
Sharon sighed heavily and rested her head against the backrest. She was alone, alone in one of the worst moments of her life, alone when she, for once, really needed someone by her side. She had always been an independent woman, taking care of herself and her children on her own. She was also aware she couldn't be always strong, not when she felt like her own world was crumbling under her feet. She could have called a friend – she had some – but she hated feeling needy. She didn’t fancy asking for help, she didn’t fancy showing she wasn’t always the strong woman she forced herself to be for the world.
Pressure built against her eyelids and she knew she couldn’t hold back the tears much longer. It was a lost battle, but one she was willing to fight until the sobs threatened to choke her. She was stubborn, she was fierce and she hated crying. She hated breaking down and letting her feelings control her, but she was aware that this time it was going to happen anyway.
Her sister was dead. Her baby sister Lauren, six years younger than her. The sister Sharon had proudly held in her arms when she was born, the sister she had protected fiercely from anyone who could have hurt her, the sister she had comforted every time a boy had broken her heart, the sister to whom she had been a second mother.
Lauren always had a smile on her face, she was a bubbly and loving person. She had always looked up to Sharon, thinking of her big sister as an inspiration. Truth to be told, Lauren was the example to follow; she was the strongest and bravest woman Sharon had ever met. Sharon wished she had told that to her sister more often. She also wished she had visited her sister more often, but between her work schedule and two small children, it was nearly impossible for her to fly back home. Lauren knew it and insisted for Sharon to stay focused on her life. Sharon unwillingly agreed, but not a day went by without her calling Lauren – once, twice, three times during the day – to check on her baby sister and make her feel her love.
Sharon remembered with a wistful smile when Lauren surprised her, showing up at her front door along with their mother. She remembered the overwhelming joy and relief she had felt when Lauren had announced her with a wide smile that her cancer had disappeared. Sharon had cried while holding her baby sister in her arms. Ricky and Emily were too young to understand what was going on, but spotting the joy of the grown-ups they started bouncing around the house cheerfully.
Three months after that happy moment, Lauren had a relapse. Cancer was back and this time it was far more aggressive. Lauren didn’t lose hope and kept fighting with all the strength she had left. She loved life and she had no intention of letting go. The doctors were cautiously hopeful; her sister seemed to react well to the treatment and seemed unbreakable.
Until today. Sharon had called Lauren in the morning. Her baby sister greeted her with her nevertheless usual cheerful tone, but Sharon had sensed something weird in Lauren’s voice. She seemed exhausted, slurring her words, and slower at finding the right words to say. Lauren had reassured Sharon saying she was high with her own personal drugs cocktailas she used to call the medicines the doctors gave her. Sharon had promised to check on her sister at lunch, but then she got caught on with work and the phone call to her sister had to wait. By the time she had gone back home after work with the intent of calling Lauren right away, she had received the news her sister’s heart had stopped a hour before.
That missed phone call was going to be Sharon’s biggest regret. A tear rolled down her right cheek and before she was able to blink the rest away, others streamed down her face. Sharon hated crying. She allowed it only when she was at home. She would hide in the bathroom and get in the shower, letting the water muffle her sobs. No one would hear her cry. By the time she would step out of the shower, the water would have washed away any trace of tears and she would have been as good as new.
Sharon didn’t even make it to the bathroom this time. She stayed on the couch as tears rolled down her cheeks relentlessly. Before she knew it, a sob escaped her lips and she covered her mouth with both hands as she tried to muffle the next ones. She brought her knees against her chest, resting her forehead on them. Her shoulders started shaking and sobs racked her body as grief hit her hard. She had lost her sister, she had lost a piece of her heart.
Sharon didn’t know how long she had been crying, but she slightly jumped, startled, when she felt a tiny hand on her leg, “Mama?” A shaky, frightened voice called to her.
Sharon sighed and tried to quickly wipe away her tears before looking up. She was fully aware she was looking awful, her mascara smudged, but when she met Emily’s worried eyes, she couldn’t care less.
“Oh baby…” Sharon whispered, her voice hoarse from the crying. “Why aren’t you sleeping?” She asked softly.
“Nightmare…” Emily simply answered, rubbing her eyes tiredly. She studied her mother for a few seconds before asking worriedly, “Are you crying, Mama?”
“It’s okay, baby.” Sharon replied soothingly, forcing her voice to sound firm. She opened her arms, “Come here, I need to talk to you about something important.”
“Something bad?” Emily asked, fear obvious in her sweet voice.
“I’m afraid so, honey.” Sharon answered softly, her eyes glistening with unshed tears.
Emily climbed on the couch, right into her mother’s arms. Sharon hugged her tight, nuzzling in her daughter’s hair and breathing the fruity scent of her shampoo. Sharon dropped a kiss on the top of Emily’s head before starting to comb soothingly her hair. “Remember when I explained to you that Aunty Lauren is very very sick?” Sharon asked, fresh tears welling up in her eyes.
Emily nodded quietly against her mother’s chest. Sharon kept stroking her daughter’s hair. She swallowed and tried her best to get rid of the lump in her throat before going on, “Remember what Mrs. Richardson explained to you and your classmates about Skittles the hamster last year?”
“Skittles was very sick and he went to Heaven.” Emily recalled, snuggling deeper against her mother. “We buried him in the school’s garden and we said a prayer for him.”
“That’s right, Emily.” Sharon replied in a trembling tone, stroking her daughter’s hair.
“Is Aunty Lauren with Skittles in Heaven?” Emily suddenly asked, catching her mother by surprise.
Sharon was aware that her daughter was really smart for her age, but she wasn’t expecting Emily to put two and two together so quickly. A tear rolled down Sharon’s left cheek as she tightened her embrace on her daughter. It took her a few seconds to answer in a choked tone, “Yes, baby, she is. She is in Heaven now.”
Emily looked up to meet her mother’s gaze with teary eyes. Her upper lip started quivering and it didn’t take too long for Emily to break down in tears. She cried against her mother’s chest, Sharon rubbing soothingly her daughter’s back while tears streamed down her face too.
“I-I… I c-c-couldn’t say… g-g-goodbye.” Emily told her mother between sobs.
Sharon rested her cheek against her daughter’s head as she rocked the child soothingly. Minutes went by before Emily finally calmed down. Sharon moved a strand of hair from her daughter’s face before softly whispering to her, “I’m going to show you something.”
Sharon put the blanket that was on the couch around her daughter and delicately took her in her arms. She walked through the living room with Emily snuggled against her. Sharon opened the sliding glass door and stepped outside in her house’s backyard. She sat on one of the chairs and adjusted the blanket around Emily as she told her daughter, “Honey… look at the sky. Do you see the stars?”
Emily moved her head away from Sharon’s chest and looked up at the sky. She nodded, her eyes still shining with tears when Sharon went on, “Do you see the brightest star up there?” She pointed at it and added, “Here on the left, baby.”
Emily nodded and Sharon ran a hand through her daughter’s hair before telling her, “Aunty Lauren is right there. When you miss her, you just have to look up at the sky and search for her star. It’s her way to let us know that she is still here for us, that we’re not alone. She is looking over us, always will, baby.” Sharon’s lips brushed against her daughter’s temple and she dropped a kiss there.
“What if I don’t see it? What if the star is not here anymore?” Emily wondered with a trembling voice.
“It will always be here, honey… and you will always see it because Aunty Lauren’s star is the brightest.” Sharon explained. “See how shiny it is?”
Emily nodded, but didn’t say a word. Her teary eyes were glued to her “auntie’s star”. She felt her mother move slightly and turned to meet her gaze, “Mama?”
“Yes, baby?” Sharon replied softly, putting back a strand of hair behind her daughter’s ear.
“Can we stay here a little more with Aunty?” Emily asked shyly.
“Sure we can, sweetheart.” Sharon answered with a sad smile.
Sharon leaned against the back of the chair and pulled Emily against her. She gently adjusted the blanket around her daughter and kissed her temple. Emily snuggled deeper against her mother before turning her attention to the sky. Sharon did the same when Emily whispered to her, “You’re right, Mama. Auntie’s star is very shiny.”
This chapter is based on one of my favorite episodes, where we meet Ricky for the first time... And you all know how that goes.
Also, I made an announcement about this story in the author’s notes so you might want to read that as well.
Ricky Raydor x Reader
Major Crimes
Meeting Sharon and being nervous because you aren’t catholic;
Y/N L/N was dating Ricky Raydor, the son of LAPD captain Sharon Raydor. She had met his sister but hadn’t yet met his mother or adoptive brother. They were at the condo door and he had just knocked, sensing her unease he spoke up.
“Relax, she’ll love you.”-Ricky
“How can you be sure?”-Y/N
“You won me over, right?”-Ricky
The door opened and revealed Rusty Beck.
“Hey Ricky. Oh, you’re Y/N, right?
Sharon’s dying to meet you.”-Rusty
Ricky squeezed her hand reassuringly as they entered the space.
“Just stay beside me.”-Ricky
“Yeah. Thanks.”-Y/N
She followed him into the room as Sharon approached.
“Hello, Y/N, right? I’m Sharon, this is my other son, Rusty. Emily couldn’t make it but she mentioned how lovely you were and she was not kidding.”-Sharon
“Thank you Mrs. Raydor.”-Y/N
“Oh please. Call me Sharon. I hope you like pizza, I forgot to get groceries.”-Sharon
“Pizza’s great, thanks.”-Y/N
The non-catholic ‘issue’ went over fine, as Ricky knew would be the case. He later let slip an ‘I told you so’ and earned a small swat as they were walking to his car.
Determined 😂
Maybe we should ask Andy.
Ask Andy what?
Ricky! Hey..can you...CONGRATS GUYS...oops did I destroy the surprise?
